Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Bulldogma, I CANNOT wait to see what Viking's babies look like. I have his twin brother still here, but only one mature pullet, and Wasp is the dominant roo. He doesn't allow any breeding by the subordinate roos.

I'm thinking of putting all the pullets in one coop and then penning the boys in a frat house (lol) and moving one in with the girls every few weeks to allow each one to breed. Just can't decide which group would be best to free range. First I think boys, so none of them can harass the kids and other birds. Then I think girls so they have to lay eggs where we can find them (we currently have 2 rogue hens). I dunno, but I'd better decide quick!

No more coons. Hubby scared me this morning saying he thought I caught a skunk (!) but the trap was empty. Can't find the one coon's kits. They, unfortunately, won't survive long without their mom in his heat.

I have 2 broody Silkies if anyone has a half dozen eggs they would like to sell.

Took some pictures this morning of a few going to their new homes today. This is the color I seem to get on almost all my chicks.

I just want some diversity in colors.
WHOO HOO! Their new home is with me and I couldn't be happier

They are not liking at all being handled though

I have to admit it is new to me too. How in the heck do you keep the bedding out of the water and shavings? I think all six are creasted. I am thinking 2 roos out of the 6. What age do you know gender? I gave them herbs & flowers tonight and it was gone in no time

My older two girls won't touch them but oh the 3 year old can't stop watching them. Thank you so much!!!

*Food...is what I ment

Quote: I keep the shavings out of food and water by using large ceramic bowls upside down and put the food and water on top of them. for younger chicks I make sure the water bowl is much smaller than the ceramic one so they can hop up on and still reach. for older chicks I use a waterer that's the same size as the bowl so they just stand there and drink. for food, again I put a feeder up higher for older chicks. for younger chicks I just use the bowl itself (about 2.5-3" deep) so they have to actually climb in to eat but can't kick the food out.

Mine never see a bowl of water... from the time they are born they have access to hanging bottles and buckets with chicken nipples on them... I never have to worry about nasty water. Best chicken invention ever, and newborn chicks pick up on it quickly. Mine wouldn't know what to do with a bowl.

For feed... I feed FF from day one, so it's gone before it has a chance to get anything in it. I started feeding FF for other reasons, but one of the side benefits has been a lack of waste.

I do the same with the food for the chicks, but with water I use a hanging water bottles in the brooder. They quickly learn to drink from them.
