Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I'm sad this evening. I was out looking at the chicks in my brooder - and I counted, and one was missing. I counted again - still one missing. I started looking and found him on the other side of the cardboard I had around the brooder to help hold in heat. Apparently he flew up and over - and then couldn't get back in, and it was way too cold without the warmth of the heat lamps and the other chicks. I had no idea they could fly that high at less than 3 weeks in age. I had planned on taking the cardboard out this weekend anyway, but I went ahead and did it tonight. So - now I have only 10 SFH instead of 11. Poor thing. I hope he didn't suffer, although he must've been panicked not to be able to get back to his buddies.

I am sorry for your loss, and I certainly understand how you feel.

Are they from GF? I would let them know if so - or whomever you got them from. If from GF, I'm sure they were quite costly. May I ask what people are paying for their SFH chicks?

No I bought then from an auction site. They were cheaper than GF but not much of a bargain with the crooked toes. I won't complain to the seller because the first shipment was late and more than half were DOA and I was upset and then they got upset with me. I really wanted these so I stretched the budget to get them.
I don't think it was deliberate but if I say anything they will take it that way. I don't know why I should care how they feel. I work hard for my money.

Crooked toes are primarily a incubator temp issue from what I have read - more so than genetics. We all work hard for our money - I would have said something, although I understand where you're coming from. They should at least be informed so that they can correct the issue going forward. Maybe they will read this...

Well we know they are rare and I do hope to hatch someday. Not to mention they are cold hardy and Lord have mercy is it cold here. Is there an emoticon for shivering?

I hatched a few, very few chicks with crooked toes from my Dels, but not in a long time. I'll have to research it and see how genetic it is or not. These can get around and if it's not genetic I can breed them. One of them has the crest.

There are other people selling chicks and I must confess I did get a deal. It was not an easy transaction for the seller either since the first box was late and all except two of the chicks were DOA. The second box was late too but only one died of that group. It was a marans, not a SFH.

I did a search last night into Sweden's chickens but found little of the breeds they have. I did find they had a Newcastle situation over there. I have to remember to request new information from the USDA for 2012.

Well take care and stay warm if your in a cold area on the earth.

I am sorry for your loss. I have also found them to be extraordinary flyers. I even clipped the flight feathers on one wing on each one and they still could fly out of the Brooder. I've got a lid on it now and am making the grow-out pen more like an aviary for them.
