Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Anyone out there have first hand knowledge of swedish flower hens, Norgiwgion Jaerons and hedemoras? I live in lat 59.. homer alaska maritime climate..cold but no usually bitter winters... (currently deep snow and about 1 degree) cool fairly dry summers ave 60 f. never really hot. some rainy season. I have about a 1/2 acre, free range one coop, 6x8 along the house. un-insulated with lots of hay. and water in a elec dog dish... I am putting up a 25 x 75 high tunnel this spring for a permaculture orchard to be built in. I would like to have a small egg laying flock in the yard and using the coop that is family friendly, good egg layers, predator aware (we have eagles here) and rare breed preffered.

In the hi tunnel I would like a small 3-5 hens and a roo, flock of some small sweet rare breed to inhabit the orchard year round something to lay eggs, be a part of the ecosystem, be pets and sale breed stock occasionaly. what are the pluses and minus of each and do you have any recommendations based on my situation thank all for your time in wisdom

Hi! Welcome to BYC and to this thread! I only have cockerels and pullets right now. I allow two cockerels to free range with my flock at this time. I have to say they seem pretty aware of their surroundings, more than any of the other breeds that I have, including my resident rooster. I was working on another coop and got a kick out of "the boys". They had to be right next to me while I worked. A hawk from quite a distance away screeched and they both ran to me, I guess I was to save them. So cute! They also blend in nicely with their surroundings. They are so friendly. Even the young ones don't try to run away. I open their pen and they all congregate at my feet. I'm looking forward to these birds and increasing my flock.

It does make it pretty hard to walk around, doesn't it!! You kind of have to shuffle.

Beautiful afternoon here in TN. Thought I would post a few new photos of the SFHs!

I am going to have my hands full with this little guy!

Cute crested pair!

I love how her feathers look frosted! (the gray one)

Four of the girls!

So how many of you will be breeding and selling hatching eggs in the coming year? I am taking this year off from hatching anything because of other projects - and the fact that I have 17 layers already - but next year I am going to want to hatch some of these beauties!
