Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Aww.. so sorry.

I wonder.. Do Swedish Flower Hen eggs just not ship well? I've had several dozen shipped recently and had a similar experience. If it were happening with all of the breeds that I'm hatching eggs from I would question my incubator/temps/humidity, but it isn't. Mostly just seems to be an issue with the SFH. Has anyone else found this to be the case?

Maybe they had rough transit?

KYTINPUSHER just hatched 8 for 8 of my swedes. I was dang impressed -- congrats Walli !!

I am sure shipping played a part... but an inexperienced person hatching the eggs, plus a couple of temp. spikes during the heat of the summer did not help those poor eggs any.

I got my current SFH as chicks from Beth... my enabling friend.
Beth could hatch a rock... I tell her that all the time.

I'm not the most experienced either with only a half dozen or so hatches under my belt, but didn't have temp or humidity issues and have calibrated the thermometer and hygrometers so everything is good in that regard. Out of 22 eggs, 3 hatched and one died at 4 days. More recently out of 13 eggs in the incubator, only 3 remain (two were leaking and the rest were completely clear when I cracked them open in a ziploc) and I'm really, really hoping they hatch.

Shipping in the cold must be playing a role but it's kinda frustrating because I cannot figure out what's going wrong beyond that. It's so saddening to know they're developing but not making it to hatch.

I think I may have figured it out. Just had a conversation with a local friend and she knows someone who works in one of the main postal hubs that all of our packages go through before reaching our local post ofices. Apparently there is a postal worker who routinely shakes any package labelled with "fragile, eggs". That would explain it. Nice guy.

The unmarked packages have hatched the most eggs. Guess I need to have my eggs sent unmarked and take my chances.

Well bad news from our neck of the woods! I'm pretty sure a stray dog ran off with Runt yesterday.

She was my only SFH that was almost old enough to start laying. I was waiting for her first egg. I think the dog might actually live in the trailer park about 1/2 mile from here. We've seen them on our property before. There's 2 of them. Makes me so mad!!!! If they come around while my hubby is home, they might not make it back home. In the past they've also chased my son while he was riding his 4 wheeler. Those dogs have a reward on their head on our property.
