I know my other black hen is one of the few that are laying consistently now. How are the eggs that I sent you doing?

As for feeding, mine eat very little. They free range and fend for themselves mostly. In fact they seem to prefer table & garden scraps to feed.
That is really good to know. Since mine are only 11 weeks old I have no experience so I'll be watching to see how they navigate this spring and summer.

Quote: Thank you for the photos and info. I'm curious - did you purchase these when they were started or as chicks? Just wondering because I noted that they were all pullets so that's pretty good for just random as chicks! I Love the color in the first one. I think my gray is going to end up looking like yours as she now has some of the tan feathers coming in.

HIs name is 'Arne' after my Father In-Law who passed away.

Again, thanks for the photos! Interesting that this kiddo looks like the FEET have more gray and the leg itself more yellow undertone.

i'm not sure i should add myself to the list, as i currently only have one SFH, my handsome roo Max -- but am hoping to get him some SFH girls sometime this year, so will chime in here:
lawatt -- Sonoma County, CA (one hour north of San Francisco)

Thanks, Dalishgrams, for the photo of the sprig.

Now I have a sprig question as it related to SFH.

If the value of the SFH is that they bred without intervention for the "survival of the strongest", would having a sprig be an issue? Question being: Is there any reason that having the sprig would make them unhealthy or less strong or less able to survive in the wild?

The only reason the sprigs may be an issue is if one day we want the SFH to be an APA recognized and shown breed. Right now, side sprigs are a DQ for all breeds, I believe. (forgive me if it is only a point loss, its been awhile since I looked it up). I don't know if they would change the rules for this breed, but it seems unlikely. That is why I won't cull hens because of it until I have more than I need and can pick and choose. But since I have way more roosters than I need, I can afford to be pickier with them and not use one with side sprigs. To me, it just makes sense that when I have 2 roos that are basically equal in value to the flock, to choose the one without sprigs.
