YAY Im getting some of Tarheelbirdys eggs! Hopefully I can hatch out some black pullets! At least one I hope!!!

i don't remember who Bulldogma's most recent chicks came from (i hatched them for her), but she had 3 blacks a blue and a splash in the bunch, plus one typical mille fleur (brown with golden face).

personally i prefer the tri-colored birds, with the black-based ones being top of my list. that being said, my 3 oldest are all blue-based, then the 4 from Bulldogma's flock all appear black based (tho the roo is the only black, the rest are blue/splash based). the youngest 4 are still up in the air.

ho on here has more darker birds in their flock? I am looking to add black pullets (wishful thinking right?

) Also darker mile fluer colors? I was to get at least 2 new bloodlines to add to mine and would like one to be darker and one to be lighter!! Any ideas on who has what Im after!?! I think KYTinpusher has the darks and Bernie56 has the other ones I was looking at!

My birds are currently putting out black-based mille fleur. They're starting out red and then they darken up. They take after their daddy:

Since one of my girls is homozygous for blue, all hers are coming out blue-based. The other two girls are heterozygous for blue and some of theirs come out blue-based every now and then.

I'm loving those blacks and dark grays too. That's what I'm looking to get next.

Rooster question for y'all.

ROOSTER SURVEY

-Do your roosters "dance" for the girls and wait for the girls to accept their advances? OR Do they just grab and attack against their will?

-If they dance, at what age did they begin that behavior?



HU has said that he tries not to keep roosters that don't dance and court the ladies. (He touches a little on that here, but not as in-depth as the book) He states that the dancers don't injure the hens like the non-dancers do.

Now I don't have experience with this but what he's saying makes good sense to me and my intention is to select for dancers and remove those that don't when I have the choice. Please tell me YOUR experience with this.

wildhorseannie is who I got my colorful variety from. Two are black-based, 2 blue-based and one yellow. I also have some growing out from dahlisgrams and one seems to be a black/white pullet!

And we have a CHICK! I got a quick glimpse at the bedtime check. Sounds very vigorous. Photo tomorrow. I hope we wake up to a second. There were a total of 4 eggs to get this far from 6. It would be delightful if we got all 4 to hatch, but even just 2 is terrific, considering how difficult it's been to hatch shipped eggs.

My roosters dance (various breeds) but the hens all seem to ignore them and thus then they pounce. I have one EE roo that seems to just sneak attack. Interesting premise. I certainly have enough roosters to make that sort of selection....all but ONE of my GF chicks from my first shipment are boys. For. Real.

I'm so excited!!! And I may be getting some more chicks tomorrow from GF as part of a shipment via a local BYcer friend as well. Hopefully by fall I will have eggs to exchange. Hopefully with getting a few here and a few there I have nicely diversified genetics and will have lots of wonderful colors. So far, no split wings, curled toes or crossbeaks.

My coops are full...I need to get with the program on a fifth coop! Today's babies can stay in the coop they are hatching in though; it's a big one with bantams living in it. Once everybody is laying I might cull the non-SFH birds.

Is a curled toe a genetic defect or a function of a post hatching experience? I have pics to post tomorrow of my SFH. One of which with a beautiful brown crest on a red& white speckled body has the curled toe on one foot.

I know you can fix the toe I seen it on a post about peahens or pheasants but it can be done
