Swedish Flower Hen Thread

These swedes have been a joy to watch grow up. They are so inquisitive, not scared of much and can flat run. My fourteen week old roo is "crowing" already. It's a sad sounding thing, but you wouldn't know it by watching him. He goes nose to nose with my ameracauna roo daily. He seems to forget the whipping he takes and never backs down. He already knows he's the boss, his body just won't let him BE the boss yet. Then he'll hop on my lap and go to sleep. None of the five that I have look alike.

Hmmmm so maybe one of mine DID lay those eggs! That's really interesting that yours did that. It was actually in the 17th week that I saw the first one (about a day before 18 weeks) and one of those little girls was hanging around in the nest box a lot. I never witnessed her lay an egg, but the eggs were totally different in size and color than my older laying flock.

I have a roo, 5 weeks, and he is already crowing. Every time the big guys crow he "crows" right back at them. At first I couldn't figure out what the sound was so I started watching for it, and sure enough it was one of the little guys. Sounds kind of like someone having a really bad asthma attach, but he is quite pleased with himself.

I think 1 or 2 of mine did the same thing!

Well that makes me feel better to hear that from both of you! After I posted about it earlier this spring and then having it stop, I felt bad that I posted because I didn't want to have said something that wasn't true!
this happened to e as well.....is this new for you SFH older flocks? did that happen before

I candled my eggs last night. Day 10-11.
SFH, Started with 7, 1 not fertile, all the others look good.
RIR heriitage, Started with 3, only 1 looks good.
I just added 2 Columbian Wyandottes that my broody hen moved off of. After setting for 2 weeks she suddenly changed nests to a nest with no eggs (I only have 2 nesting boxes)! Those eggs were cold, so I'm not sure what will happen. If they are still viable, they should hatch a few days ahead of the others.

Well I checked my 6 SFH eggs in the bator last night and it looks like only 1 is going to develop into anything. 1 more might but I think it has a blood ring that has formed. I'll leave it in because I am not sure. Bummer.

At least I have 8 chicks in the coop right now that are anywhere between 3 and 5 weeks old.

I really need to set up a hatcher. I'll have to work on that.
Just a still air incubator will be fine, and you can get one for $75 or less. I lved having two. I say loved because the day I put my hatcher outside to dry after washing out the hatching mess, the first pack of rooster thugs we had came up onto the deck, mjumped up onto the table and pecked a hole in it, and it was completely useless after that. They went to freezer camp not long after that.
