Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Hello...

I live in Victor, Montana, USA. There is a breeder of Swedish Flower Hens and American Bresse who just lives down the road from me. I plan on calling him tomorrow to enquire about the SFH and the Bresse as I'm part swedish, there in lies my interest in them and I would really like a trio of Bresse so I can raise some to eat as they sound delicious.

If anyone would like his information I would be happy to get hold of him and ask.

Sincerely,
Jodi

Hello, thank you.I really want to get some SFH partly because I have Swedish grandparents and I found them while I was looking up the Swedish and Norwegian chicken breeds, as I am also 3rd generation Norwegian lol I guess you could say I'd like to have a part of my heritage in my flock. My great grandma had a big flock of Barred Rocks anad she had a couple roosters because she said she couldn't watch the hens all the time but the roosters could. Those roosters were like night and day. The biggest of them was a mean hateful monster of a rooster who tried to kick my butt every time I went to help gram feed them...The other rooster, the smaller one, was an angel and the funny thing was that, every time the monster came charging at me the little guy charged him and distracted him. LOL

Anyway, the SFH will go well with my SLW's and my Narragansett turkeys.

Now tht I've talked your ear off....lol

Welcome Jodi! My husband's family is Swedish, which is mainly what attracted me to the breed initially. But they are gorgeous, wonderful birds which is why I have so many! The roosters are generally very well mannered and are excellent flock watchers. Definitely one of my favorite breeds.

Hi KYTinpusher

My biological father is Swedish and I just wanted to put some heritage in my flock. lol I know Silver Laced Wyandottes aren't part of my heritage but they are SSSOOOO pretty. the SFH are definitely gorgeous. I love the ones that are all speckled and cute looking. Sadly, I can't have a rooster because I live in a village and my neighbors would have kittens all over the floor and scream at me if I did.

However, I do have a local that raises SFH, American Bresse and Cream Legbars and I can get chicks from him. I want to eventually like to get some of the Bresse as well.

Well, thank you so much for the welcome and you take care.

Sincerely,
Jodi

their personality and coloration are what drew me to the sfh primarily. not eggs, not meat, but PERSONALITY! and boy are they loaded LOL.

I have yet to find an aggressive rooster myself. most are usually so much under my feet when they're free ranging that I've damaged a few by stepping on them.

I got into the breed rather by accident (Ki4got) LOL... and recently found out that I'm almost 50% Swedish/Norwegian! We didn't know much about my dad's side - thought it was mostly German. Nope - tiny bit German, but mostly Swedish. LOL!

I was looking for Icelandics (my DH is Icelandic) and couldn't get ahold of any when I was offered some sfh eggs so I figured I'd give them a try.
I've had several very bad rooster expiriences w/ other breeds over 8 yrs of chicken keeping, so far the 2 sfhRoosters I have now have been wonderful , they do all the protective things & call the girls when they find a good treat (bug) they so far have not given me any trouble & I have them free ranging right around the house/yard/driveway. They have also been fine w/ our dogs, cats & goats which not all chickens have been so again I'm very pleased so far. Welcome to the thread Jodi!

That's the Nordic character; sensible, straightforward and positive

I find it funny how these Swedish landraces seem to have become the next hype in US chicken keeping, while in their own home country they're just your everyday chicken. I'll have to start breeding Finnish landraces in anticipation of their turn coming next after the Swedes. Might make a buck shipping eggs to the states.

good luck with that... (shipping to the states)...

I'm working on getting Dorking eggs imported from England, and it's going to be several thousand dollars with the testing, fees, permits, etc. just for what will amount to one very large hatch of chicks (hopefully). almost $1000 for just the testing on the English flock, not to mention the rest of the fees, plus the shipping costs.
