Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Hello,
I'm new to SFH and getting hatching eggs this weekend. Trying to read all the information and know what to look for in the best breeding quality babies. The lady is marking the two different pens eggs so I can tell them apart. :celebrate What are the faults to look for and what is a snoleopard pattern look like? I'm so excited about having some of these amazing birds.
Hi, welcome to BYC and SFH! :frow

Start by running a dry hatch for SFH. When picking your breeders, if you are indeed breeding... try and keep a crested female instead of male (if you even like crested). But don't keep crested in both genders as you will get double crested birds and is not good for this breed. Also, I would grow any possibilities out to at least 1 year old if they don't have major faults. They still go through some changes.

Faults to check for are sprigs and split wing but not until older. As well as shank color, lack of flowering, and double crests. Maybe eye color.

I have two and ate 1 snoleopard. They are basically black and white with some straw color but no red, I think. I will try to post a pic of mine later... but here is a pic I found on the web of an SL SFH... she is light base, mine are dark base.

Most of my others have been milli fleur. Hope you love the breed and have a great adventure! :wee

OK here is my girl, her daughter looks very similar...

Just for fun, a crested milli fleur girl... Sorry for the bad pics.

Wow, the colors are beautiful. What are sprigs and how do I know they have it?

I am so excited for my SFH to hatch.
Sprigs are a fleshy growth on the side of the comb that shouldn't be there. Kind of like an extra point off to the side. You will know them if your are looking. They usually start to pop up by 4 months for me. They can be subtle or very pronounced.

See near the back of this one?

Also near the back of the comb on this one. It's really easy to see once you become familiar.

Great to know, It seems like it would be very clear on a live bird. It also seems like it would look sort of like a straight comb trying to get buttercup points. Having buttercups in my laying flocks makes that easier to see to think about that way. What are the color faults that I might watch for? What was causing the curled toes and is it something I need to watch for?

Yes, your Buttercup thought and experience is a good description.

Color faults to me would be white legs, wrong eye color, or lack of flowering. Beyond that, as far as I know.. anything else goes. Yellow legs are preferred but pink or pink with mottling is accepted.

Lack of flowering IMO SHOULD be one of the biggest faults to cull for. :old

Some good reading..
