Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Well come home last night to two dead chicks and 8 missing. Checked the game camera and a red-tailed hawk had a really good lunch yesterday....

Soooooo..... now, for the first time in 10 years, the chick coop has a roof on it....

Does anyone have any SFH chicks they are selling? Looks like I need a new start. I am in knoxville TN....

Thanks in advance

Oh nooooo, how horrible! Sorry to hear about your chicks, that is such a bummer.

That is so sad. I am in Gatlinburg, just started getting 5 eggs a day from my gals last week. I will be setting my first test hatch on Monday. I would be happy to help you out with eggs or chicks.

I was mistaken about my 8 week old SFH roos crowing. I was out at 5am doing chores this morning and turned on the lights in the barn to milk goats. In the middle of milking I hear repeated crows so jump up to see who the "early bloomer" is. Was I ever shocked to discover it was my birchen cochin bantam hen! The 8 -8 week old SFH chicks were lined up at the feeder eating and none of them were crowing but there's tiny Bedelia up on the roost crowing her heart out. Too funny!!! Maybe she figures if she acts like a roo she can still be in charge or maybe not be pestered by 6 roos when they start feeling fiesty! I'd read about hens crowing but now I've witnessed it, firsthand. It's a hoot!

My 12 Swedish Flower Hens are almost 6 weeks old now. We are taking pictures as they grow... it is amazing to see how much they have changed!

Below are pictures of a couple of our chicks as a day olds... and, then today, at a few days shy of 6 weeks

if you are interested, I have more pictures of all 12 chicks out on our website here http://froggybogfarm.weebly.com/swedish-flower-hens.html :)

I just love how personable these chicks are... so curious and totally people friendly.

Most of my flock of hens was wiped out last Easter morning by a loose dog. I feel your pain.

I have four lovely SFH hens. The two "mille fleur" colored hens I intend to breed to one roo from a different line. However, the girls probably won't be laying until May or June. If you still need some Swedes at that time pm me and perhaps I can mail you some eggs.

Just wanted to share the new photos of the crew today! I just love how no two look the same! The gals are laying almost an egg a day. The eggs started out small but are already getting larger, but not "large" yet. I am going to set my first test hatch next week.
