Sunflower: it almost looks like an abscess of sorts and he's got swelling and an inflammatory response. I would get apple cider vinegar with mother in his water if you don't already do that. Its good bacteria keeping bad bacteria in check. Excellent preventive. Next if you can lance this pustular swelling carefully right at the head of it (brown and yellow area at the crook of his beak) with a pin cleansed in iodine or something of the sorts and gently push out any abscess material I'd push from the base of the eye downward towards the beak. Careful of the nasal opening you don't want him aspirating any of that stuff. Cleanse with iodine or good soapy antibacterial soap and water again being careful with his sensitive respiratory tract and keeping clear of this nostril and eyes.

This may also require antibiotics internally. There's a few articles on Byc that list appropriate medicines for certain problems. "Ultimate medicine dosing chart" or something like that might get you started in the right direction. I think I saw good old penicillin for skin problems. 1/2 cc inj. to breast muscle or 3 cc in water daily for 3-5 days. Double check a few sources on here or google before you go on this. Tylan is another antibiotic I've seen mentioned.

Forgot this part: after the wound is cleansed and pus removed apply antibiotics ointment like bacitracin. Hope my post is not too late.

But I just found this thread. Happened to be on pea fowl but I bet my left foot it's the very same problem. Sounds like they use something called Tylan for oral or injectible antibiotic for this problem along with draining the pus out. Good luck!

Thanks so much Bogtown, this gives me another prospective on how to treat him. I am nervous about cutting into his face, he gets antsy and jerks around a lot. May have to break down and take him to vet. I would like to learn how to give an injectible as I don't know how. I do believe he needs a shot, he is not taking the meds in very well in his food or when I try to spoon it in to his beak. He is not wanting to eat his special foods I'm making him to build up his strength, he just wants to share it w/ hens. He is getting so stressed to be away or separated from his hens, so I am not keeping him in the house. You can take a chicken to water but you can't make him drink! LOL I have been giving him water w/ a clove of garlic and also the apple cider vinegar (2 waterers) But it's not looking any better.

Sunflower: how is it going with Art's abcess? Did you end up going to the Vet with him or did you find someone to hold him for ya while you drained that thing?

Thanks Dani, it's hard loosing our little banty rooster and we do miss him so much.

Art has not changed much, I have not felt comfortable cutting or poking his face with a pin. I called the vet today and made an appointment for Monday. The swelling is now hard and seems maybe a little more tender, but it's not any bigger. I am still treating w/ ACV (have not found the variety w/ Mother) in one waterer and a clove of garlic in another waterer everyday. I've been supplementing their diets w/ lots of lettuce and eggs. I am hoping the vet will show me how to give them a shot myself. Art totally is acting himself and not sick at all. Thank goodness for that. Thanks again for all your support and advise.
