We have a lovely black rooster with green highlights who has ONE swollen foot. He hops from side to side and mostly holds one leg up(the sore one) He sits a lot. The others are pecking him. The scales all look normal. The foot is warm and swollen, there is no sign of Bumblefoot whatsoever. It looks like it started in the side toe and then center of foot, it is warm to the touch and the center is swollen. There is no abcess or punctures or boils. I would guess gout if anything. He is drinking a lot of water and eating layer feed, which all the birds eat, roosters and hens. I give him 81mg aspirin once per day. It has been almost a week and no change. I will try to post a picture tomorrow.

It does sound like gout. Especially since there's no indication of injury or bumble foot. Is he overweight? Do you feed him alot of treats? I'm guilty of being to generous with my birds since I love them so much. I've always been told layer feed isn't suitable for a roosters health.

Can you post any pictures? Is the ankle swollen or the whole foot? Have you checked the leg joints as well for swelling. Gout usually affects both feet. Is there a scab on the foot pad or swelling in between toes? Layer feed has too much calcium for roosters and non-laying hens. But I have never seen gout in my roosters who eat layer. There can be many causes of gout, if that is what it is, but I would like to see pictures if possible.
I would think that it may be an injury or an infection, since it is affecting only one foot.

Thanks so much, night owl. No he isnt at all overweight, they do get some table scraps occasionally but with 30 birds each one gets a mouthful. The foot is red and warm too. My guy wants to lance it but I don't even know where to start lancing it.
