Symptoms Of Systemic Staph? Bumblefoot

Thanks Wyop Rock. The vet wasn't much help beyond the meds. I asked him about cutting into it again and he said he wouldn't bother.. which goes against everything I've read on here and what you said too. I honestly think the vet thinks he won't heal. He's a small and large animal vet and I went to his clinic hours ($20 for the visit and meds...and a 1 hour drive away)
For the surgery I did last week (thursday) and tried to dig around more with tweezers 2 days ago.
I used an exacto knife the first time and I don't think I went far enough around it. It's hard all the way around. So I couldn't squeeze much. I didn t get much out and don't know if I was getting just pieces of kernel or actual flesh! I think I need to buy a scalpel and get aggressive. I've never done this surgery before this.
I'm most concerned that his leg is so HOT. Should I start penicillin injections again on top of the amoxicillin?

Here he is back in better days

Mister is so handsome:) I can see that he is very special.

I would not combine the Amoxicillin with the Penicillin.

A lot of people do surgery, but it seems that the last few I have helped with Bumblefoot have had a lot of success with soakings, application of either the drawing salve or Clear Iodine. With that much swelling and the scabs, I would have to think there is pus in there. It's a semi-hard cheese like substance, so it won't necessarily squeeze like human pus would.

I have ichthamol on hand. Yup, I think I'm going to buy a scalpel and some iodine today. I'm hoping the tricide neo and the herbal tincture get here soon

You may want to try the drawing salve or the clear Iodine to see if those work before you cut again.

Keep in mind that Tricide Neo is an antibiotic as well, so you may want to consult your vet to see if there are any Contraindications with using it along with the Amoxicillin.

FYI - make sure the Iodine you use is DECOLORIZED (CLEAR) I've attached a photo so you can see the wording:)

@Wyorp Rock
Would you suggest daily soakings and rebandaging?
I wonder if the foot is inflamed because it might be being Over treated. Sorry sillypetrooster please don't take any offense with my use of that word...what I am trying to say is if you are treating it every day, taking bandages off, soaking, looking around, could that possibly be working against you?

With him on antibiotics I would try prid but try to do just the bare minimum with the foot. You need to keep a good glob on a non stick pad every other day and see if it gets you anywhere in three days.

If the salve hasn't begun to draw anything out in three days but it looks much less inflamed start again with the silver cream but leave it alone and change it every three days.

I have found that if there is really pus/a core you will usually know it.

My rooster Mister has a bad case of bumblefoot. I have searched but can't find a list of symptoms for when staph goes systemic. I don't want to keep him in misery for longer than necessary if he isn't cureable.

His leg is hot to the touch all the way up. Respiration is 20 breaths per minute. He is hobbling around and eating and drinking normally and even preening himself. He has diareahh.

Here's his treatment history:
I have him warm in the house and have been treating for a week now with 2x daily Epsom soaks, silver sulfa cream and bandaging. I've tried to do the surgery 3 times and have not found a kernel. I was giving him 1/2 cc penicillin daily until 2 days ago when I took him to the vet. I was given 2 weeks of oral amoxicillin to give him so I have discontinued the pennicilian injections.
I'm feeding him some very fancy expensive high quality feed along with freeze dried grubs and mealworms and a crushed garlic clove daily as well as probiotics in his water.
I am waiting to receive tricide neo in the mail as well as a bumblefoot herbal tincture that was recommended..
Yes, I'm trying absolutely everything, ha Ha! He is 7 or 8 yrs old. The vet said his age is really against him in fighting this.
He is super special to me and I dont want to lose him but I don't want him to suffer either. How do you know if a staph infection has gone systematic and it is too late?
Welcome. I'm sorry about Mister. There are some great knowledgeable people here that can help you with your questions. I hope Mister gets well soon. keep us updated.

I still would suggest daily soaking (5-7minutes) then applying the salve or clear iodine and re-bandaging. The goal with using drawing salve or clear iodine is the get the scab and core worked out in short order, without having to cut again (she may need to dig around with tweezers and express what she can though) I have not done it, but the people I have helped - it only took a couple of days to a week at most. Both feet (to me) look the be infected - one more so than the other. Without getting the pus out, they won't heal - antibiotics alone won't do it.
Alternatively, clorhexidine or betadine could be used for the soakings.

I do see your point about over-treatment - hopefully she will be able to get the core out in a few days so the feet can start healing.

fwiw - @SillyPetRooster you may want to focus on the worst foot to see if you can get anything out of it and see if you can get it to start healing, then go to the next one.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks all. The tricide came in. I'm going to just do one soak per day and bandage now. I'm using ichthamol now instead if the silver sulfa. It's a drawing agent. I've used it on hoof a cesses in my mules before and it works well. I'm going to give the surgery another shot in a couple days. At least on the worst one
