Taking cuttings

finding a seedling would sure be easier, then you made need to graft that new type of mulberry . if it is the standard purple.....like i said most trees don't work asd cutting........we sure never need to try mulberry here......they pop up every where.

Guess no harm in trying.....oh another thing graft before buds open, early spring here. also would be good time to try a cutting just before buds open.

Well, any type of mulberry would do

The white sort's pretty sweet but they're so rare down here I wouldn't really mind what type.

Ahh, I'll have to visit you guys up there some time, a field full of mulberry trees would be heaven.

Just watch out for customs! You might have to slip them one up each trouser leg, like I've seen done on those border security programs

First time we've seen that type of mulberry too - we usually get the purple too.

I just started to think about trying to smuggle your cuttings past customs and getting caught. Can you imagine what it would be like to be sent to prison for snuggling a mullberry tree.

How could a person explain that to a cell mate?

So if you are going smuggle mullberry trees in to the country, I think that we should include the hatching eggs of ones choice. That would all most make the prison time worth it.

I agree that it's very unlikely that you can get a cutting to grow. Most trees just don't propagate that way. If you have access to a mullberry tree. I would try the seed or dig up a sucker that may grow from the trees root system. If you try to get a sucker to grow, you will get what ever the root stalk is, rather than what the grafted tree is. A plum tree sucker may work for a root stalk, for grafting a mullberry cutting.

Guess could try a few different trees to graft...........we just never had a reason to try another type.....we did graft some weeping mulberry , but we grafted to mulberry tree.....oh and the weeping mulberry didn't bear berries.

I ate my share of mulberries , but give me blackberries any day.........and yes they are easy started from cuttings

Ooh, blackberries

Another species I haven't eaten for a good few years now. There are a lot of fruits that are becoming quite scarce around! Although there's no shortage of oranges and bananas down here

I just wanted to first say that I have probably started at least a hundred trees from cuttings. I get most of my plants and trees that way. I just started oranges and I'll be doing more.

For grafting, try this site http://www.freeplants.com/who is mike.htm It's down to earth and very helpful.

For tree cutting I start them like roses. I cut at an angle, but instead of peeling away some bark and dipping in Rootone or TakeRoot, I smash the cut end. Not a lot, but enough to see some fibers. Then dip in one of the powders and plant in whatever medium works better for the type of tree. Most times I use potting soil or compost and sand. I start them potted or in boxes and they transplant when they have some established roots, probably 6 weeks. Breaking up the fibers lets the rooting powder in the cracks and they start much faster.

I'm too impatient to graft and I get frustrated with it. Just seems to much work for me when the other way usually works fine.
