Tapeworms won't go away! Please help!

You don't need to make individual doses, you might be able to use the yogurt as a suspension vehicle, or you could buy a proper suspension syrup like Ora-Blend, though that would add about $40 to you cost. Either way, the powder just needs to stay suspended in the yogurt or syrup.

If you do this, it would be very easy to make one batch with enough to treat all of your birds. I do this when I need to treat one with Meloxicam. I take my 15 mg pills, grind them, add some amount of suspension syrup, and voila, a liquid containing Meloxicam at 1.5 mg per ml.

Wow! That sounds like an awesome idea!!! Of course, except for the $40 extra to the cost - lol. How much of the Ora-Blend would I need though? I see it on Amazon for $27.50 for a 473 ml. bottle. And will the liquid, when mixed with the Prazi, stay good for any length of time, or would I need to prepare a batch each time and use it right away?

When I medicate my dogs or want the chickens to eat something, I use Friskies pate catfood. It makes a tempting base to hide medicines, but make sure first that they will eat it. Another method is to mix some raw egg and plain yogurt well, then the medicine, and stir into whole wheat bread crumbs (torn into bite size bits.) But it sounds like the Equimax paste would be the least expensive and easiest to give directly to each chicken.

Will Safeguard paste (10%) treat tapeworms?
I want to worm my ill bantam Cochin cockerel but I don’t know what type of worms he has (if any).
I’ve read Safeguard paste will kill 4 types of worms chickens can get including tapeworm and gapeworm.

When I make a batch of something I never use more than 40 ml, so a 473 ml bottle will last you a long time.

Example
Mix 5 grams with 50 ml. That equals 50 ml with 5000 mg praziquantel, or a suspension with 100 mg praziquantel per ml.

The minimum effective praziquantel dose is 10 mg/kg.

Math per pound is:
1 / 2.2 x 10 / 100 = 0.045 ml per pound

Five pounds
5 / 2.2 x 10 / 100 = ~0.23 ml per pound

I have some praziquantel/pyrantel suspension that's several years old and I think it's still good, but can't say for sure. Some drugs, like Clavamox, and maybe Baytril, have a short shelf life once mixed with liquid, so it might be best to just make the amount you would need to treat during the two week treatment period.

It will treat the same worms that Safeguard liquid for goats treats if you give the proper amount for several days in a row.

The one day treatment using any Safeguard treats only large roundworms and cecal worms.

Where did you read that the paste could be used to treat tapes? I ask because I wanna go see what was said. :pop

That really might be the way to go!! Do you know if the Ora-Blend has a long shelf life? I'm guessing you'd have to shake it really, really well before dosing so that the Prazi is mixed in really good, correct?

And to treat a 5 lb. bird --- wouldn't it actually be .23 ml of suspension, instead of the .023 ml?

So what's your thoughts --- would it be worth a try to make up my own solution?

I love the stuff!

Not sure what the shelf life is. I boiught mine years ago and now it's expired, but I still use it.

Yes, shake well.

Oops, my bad, thanks for the correction! Yes, 0.23 ml

For me it was a good investment, and I've used it for all types of drugs, metronidazole, nystatin, meloxicam, clavamox, and amoxicillin.

Okay, I'm starting to get excited - lol! What kind of bottle/container do you recommend I put it into? Then I'll figure out how much $$$ this is going to cost - lol!

So here's my next question. As we all know, it's important to alternate between meds so that the bugs don't build immunity. If I continue to keep having issues with these darn tapes, I'd be best to alternate between the different meds: Equimax, Valbazen, and my homemade Prazi solution --- correct?
