Teaching a Rooster.

Do you not like the crowing or are you being stealth? If you cant have chickens and are going rogue...I would get rid of the rooster! they will blow your cover QUICK!

I don't mind the crowing, I will do anything that helps add to my flock. My neighbors aren't to keen on the rooster and we are friends with them. I can have chickens and roosters legally.

Well he is a White Leghorn and people always say they usually develop faster!

My roosters are a Trader Jose's leghorn and a leghorn X barred rock. LOL both started crowing a little later than most. I think mine would be less noisy if there was only one of them. But having two... well.... they crow. The Leghorn has a much higher crow than the leghorn X barred rock cross We love listening to them crow.

Nice! I couldn't imagine 2 Leghorns. It is loud enough here at egg time when my Leghorn hens go off, it is crazy annoying!
My rooster tried to crow again this morning, i think he's an early bloomer...that's like a whole 4 extra weeks we have to hear him.lol.

Oh good. If you like the crowing and you can legally have them, you have nothing to worry about! I know some neighbors dont like the roosters crow or the hens happy songs because they laid an egg.....but I dont like my neighbors barking dogs! So it is all fair in the end. I also enjoy having a rooster in my flock...he actually has become my favorite! Good Luck with your flock. Chickens are SO much fun!

A happy rooster in deed! Mine crows around 6am every morning. We have our storm windows shut for winter, so we hardly notice. Come summer, when the windows are left open it will be much more noticeable, but I don't mind. Try offring folks around you a dozen eggs every now and then to warm them up to the idea. My neighbors adore my birds.

Thanks both of you. I do hope they cant here him now i have made a new shed down behind a hedge far from them! Sometimes i did wish we never got on with our neighbors, coz then i could do what ever I wanted.lol.
I sell my eggs to all my neighbors and when they help me out in what ever way I always give them a free doz.
What breed are your roosters?

We use a "cock box" for our three roos. We did it to try to keep the peace with some neighbors who were very rude about us getting roosters. They told us they expect to be able to sleep in on the weekends. So far it's working well. Some people think it's cruel; but our roos seem to be fine and we've had others, who also use them, say their roosters go into their boxes on their own. Today, I let them out at 8a.m. and all was well. I think my hens thoroughly enjoy their quiet morning together before I let the boys out. LOL. However, in the heat of the summer, we will probably bring them inside in the laundry room, as outside in a cock box, even with ventilation will get too warm I think. If you only have one, it could get too cold by itself in the winter, so you might have to do the inside thing then too... Since we have three, they do fine in the winter and we have enough hens that they don't need the roosters for heat.

My rooster is an Araucana, I adore him! He is a very good rooster! He is not quite a year old and is fairly gentlemanly. He gives the girls treats even though they all run from him and do not give him ANY attention. A 4 to 6 month old dog got into the fence and attacked the chickens...possibly more like playing but we all know how that turns out, the hens were all hiding and he was battling the dog and had submitted to the dog biting into his back when I caught up to them. He had some war wounds, but survived and is doing well. Was NOT a good day for the dog as he ended up at animal control and the neighbors had to go bail him out. He has become my favorite and will always have a home here as long as he keeps his manners.
Here is a pic...sorry I cant help myself

Just a quick update on Wilf my Barred rock cockerel, he's still not crowed but over the past few days he's started to dance in front of the hens and has tried to mate with my light sussex hen. He still gets told off by the other hens but am I right in thinking that will change wants he's fully mature?

I dont know this is my first go round. My roo is almost a year old as well as the hens he is with...NONE of the hens want anything to do with the rooster. I am curious about this as well. I have NO hope of getting any eggs hatched!
