Texas

how are all the little ones doing yine-pu? i bet you got so much chirping going on!

Doing good.. I have "thinned the herd" a bit culling the obvious "bad birds".. so in a few more weeks I will start to pick out my future breeders and future freezer birds.. plus any excess breeders that will be up for grabs

crock pot works good for tougher birds.. young birds are just slaughtered and rested for a few days.. we don't even bother to brine anymore since ours have been just as moist without it
Then they get baked, crock potted or stewed depending on what we want to do.. the fatter small birds (especially bantams) head for the grill (low and slow heat makes for a more tender bird)

Just remember most "non-cornish cross" birds will have more texture... not really "tough" just have more firmness to the meat than a mushy cornish cross will have.,

Anyone in the Texas thread here know anything about sexing FBCM's? I have 8 - 2 1/2 week old chicks and was wondering if it was possible to sex them yet?

I take it he's not an avian vet?

Can u tell if they will be tough before you eat them?

pretty much.. if rigor hasn't left the muscles yet you don't want to cook it... you can test it by seeing if the leg bends easily.. if it's still stiff the bird needs to rest a few more days to loosen up

Other than that if you check the thigh meat you can tell by pressing on it and seeing how much "give" it has

after that cooking methods can ruin a good bird.. for the non cornish always use a lower temp for a longer time to get a more tender bird.. higher heat will cause the muscle fibers to contract too fast and will toughen them up a bit more than a lower heat

You need to learn how to vent sex!.. then you can tell at hatch what you have... or even for those "undetermined" birds that you just don't know who is who

*sigh* I think all my hens are cross dressers. I'm convinced they all roosters, but they won't crow because they want to stay here. So they parading around pretending to be point of laying Pullets. And keeping me on my waiting toes.

pics?

Does anyone raise legbars? I read they lay blue eggs? Is it all legbars or just cream crested?

I think Melissa Rose has them.. and a few others on here if I remember right

Hi Guys! I need help. I have a speckled sussex who I think is egg-bound. Precious is about 4 years old. She came walking out of the coop very slow and the tail is down. I checked the vent and it is 'poofing', but the area is not red or runny. I checked inside the vent, but couldn't feel anything. I have given her a warm soak and she is now in my sun room.

I was planning on giving her some electrolytes and maybe yogurt. Please let me know what else I can do or check for.

Thanks,

Lisa :)
