TammyTx, here is another way to get better. It was suggested by BeeKissed over on the 'Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds', page 1053. We all want you well for Thanksgiving!!

The Treatment involves getting your core body temps up for a short while in order to simulate an increase in temperature, which increases white blood cell to the source of infection/inflammation~or so the premise states~and can shorten the life of your cold/URI. Simply put, it's an old timers solution to not having antibiotics or having a viral infection that doesn't respond to such. I've tried it several times when I had the first makings of a cold and it has worked each time to curtail it...if done properly. Most folks don't follow all the steps and then say it doesn't work..my son, for one. He never does it right and so it doesn't work for him, but others who have tried it report favorable results.

Here's the routine. At the first sign of a cold..sore throat, sniffles, cough, etc...and that goes for the symptoms you are currently dealing with as well...fix yourself some hot boullion or hot tea. Run a hot bath...as hot as you can possibly stand it and still sit down in it. Drink the hot drink while you are soaking in the hot bath. This is not a bath for washing, so don't wet the head. When it's as hot as you can stand it, both inside and out, get out and dry off briskly. Slather Vick's to the chest and the soles of your feet. Yes, the soles of your feet. Put on warm socks, and a sweat suit if you have one...whatever extra warm clothes you have, put it on. Go straight to bed and cover up with the warmest blankets you possess. I usually take some cold tablets in this process so that I can sleep through the next part because it's very hard for me to sleep when I'm hot. Stay bundled like that for as long as you can stand it..the hotter the better.

The next day, drink 3 glasses of OJ...you can space that throughout the day. That day you will feel about 50% better than you did the day before..at least, that's been my experience. The day after that, you'll feel about 75% better...drink the OJ that day too. On the third day, you should be feeling almost 100% better than you were...keep drinking the OJ.

I've had this work time and again and it's not all hocus pocus...simulating a fever does much what a fever does for you, it merely activates your natural immune response. The OJ helps with that as well and I've found it works better than taking Vit. C caps...makes your skin lovely as well. The Vicks? The menthol works in some way, not sure what...but when I put it on my feet, I can taste it in my mouth, so there's a systemic effect going on there whatever it is.

Can't hurt to try it and see if it helps even a little bit. It's kept me from experiencing a cold for many years now, so I'm a believer.

That is worth a try. I think it's probably too late with this go 'round.

Although.....you know I still feel it in my sinuses and back of throat but when I was out with the horse all day, walking him and massaging him I did get pretty hot.

Tomorrow I have a doc apt for my diabetes. Maybe I should ask for an antibiotic to keep from getting the lower resp infection I always get.

Thanks for the info, it is very interesting.

We'll I've had Lucy and Ethel for 5 weeks now. I'm patiently waiting for them to lay. I was told that they are ready when their waddle and crown are bright red and fully developed??? But this is like waiting for a child to be born and I was not very patient waiting for that. Ugh ugh ugh they are between 22-25 weeks-one a leg horn the other a BR. Just lay an egg for me already!

Anyone near Austin have Silkie, Frizzle or Sizzle hens/pullets for sale or trade? I have a white leghorn hen that I'd like to find a new home for and would be willing to trade her for a different (and more tame) hen or pullet. She's pretty wild but lays a perfect egg every day. Hatched in Feb. Would be great for a free-range situation.

I am furious right now!

I seem to have a predator I can't even identify. About 3-4 weeks ago i lost all 3 of the 5 week old EE chicks I had picked up from the local feed store. The wire cage they were in had only a 1 1/2 in gap at the top of the door, but all three were just gone when I went to feed them in the morning. Oh yeah, the door was still closed...
Last week I woke up to find 3 of my chickens missing. The new Polish Rooster, Along with Big Baby and Freckles, 2 of my EE chickens. They were just gone, with no trace of a fight or anything. No piles of feather, or pieces anywhere. The next day Freckles was back

I don't know how, but I'm glad. The other two have not made it back.
Well it gets worse. This morning I went to feed everyone, and my GCMARAN chicks wire cage, that is inside the coop had 1 missing little Roo, and the other Roo and pullet are dead!

No bite marks, or missing feathers, to indicate what killed them.
They had reached a good sz. I thought they were safe. It was a warm night. But something got a 6-7 week old Roo through a wire cage where the biggest gap was at the top of the door. Maybe 1 1/2 in.
I just don't get it....

something a bit similar happend to me, the gap on my coops door was a bit over 2 inches, turned out to be a cat. I found this out when my neighbor me borrow his dog on the 3 day i woke up to find the cat inside the coop, apperantly the dog scared him so much that he would not dare get close to the door to climb out.

I was going to suggest raccoon. They like to stick their little hands in coops.
