No they weren`t. They were just to stupid to hide in the chickenhouse. They got wet and cold and might got pushed around by the wind.

Were they Silkies? I see your avatar is a Silkie. When I was away for a few weeks in June, my son didn't get the 3-month old Silkie chicks inside before they got wet in a huge rainstorm. He put them to bed in a deeply bedded pen in the garage but they were soaked. Five out of sixteen died overnight, even though they were huddled up together out of the wind and rain.

The Silkies don't seem to be able to fluff up their feathers when they get wet--they just seem to pack down. Without air space in the down, they have no insulation.

Are the other chickens doing okay? It's supposed to get down to freezing in our area one more day and then warm up a little more every day until next weekend.

I thought I came up with this coop design back around 1996...before I had internet. Turns out I was about 100 years late!!! :old

Mine is similar but we are about to get another shed and modify it into a coop. I love the easy clean of it. If you allow your chickens to scratch under the coop it is almost self cleaning but I use the manure for compost.

It's 40* and the sun is trying to come out! I think it has been a week since I last saw the sun. It's getting really cold tonight then we get a bit of warm up.

Not in the mood to work today and I have other things I want/need to do.

Does anyone have a good red beans and rice recipe that is meat free? I want to serve red beans and rice with the carnitas I am making for supper.

Wow, it's over .. sweet and done. Now I am heading for all the holiday fun .. but first, let me buy the chick some ... good chick starter.
