Texas

I could use one of those outfits right about now. I have a poor naked frazzle that needs something to keep her warm and protect her from the roosters. She's currently in my kitchen. Many of her feathers came off from just handling, trying to get a pattern for a saddle to fit. By the way, there is an egg underneath her. She's given me three eggs since coming inside.

Awww, poor thing. Are her feathers just brittle because of the frizzling or did the roosters strip her like that? I have one australorpe that was bald like that cause the stupid roosters won't leave her alone. Roosters that will be chicken and dumplings as soon as I'm able to process them. I HATE them. They are not good with my hens at all.

She is in a severe molt now and has grown pin feathers all back in on her bald patches.
The main reason is because the feathers are really weak. She's has two copies of the frizzle gene, which makes the feathers very weak, brittle and sparse. They break or fall out really easily. If you handle her, the new half-developed feathers will fall right out.

The neck was done by one of my Polish pullets. The back by both me and the roosters. I put a small dog T-shirt on her to keep her warm and protect her from the roosters, plus I was handling her when designing a saddle that would repel the rain and be padded enough not to hurt her feathers and bare skin. My trying to help destroyed a lot of feathers.

The cockerels have been in the yard with her for only a few days. She's in my house now until the weather warms up. The cockerels will go back to the small pen again unless I can get a saddle that will stay on her. Her little frizzled wings are so short, it is hard to get something to stay on.

She's a real mess. One of the cockerels is a double copy frizzle as well. They are both a mess. I have to be really careful of them in the rain and the cold. This picture was taken in late September when she was in good feather.

I just don't know why anyone would breed two frizzles together. These double-copy frizzles are really difficult to deal with. They can't take the cold or wet. They have enlarged hearts and thyroid problems from their metabolism having to be so high just to stay warm. Plus, they aren't even nice looking with their dull, brittle skinny feathers. They are nothing like the fabulous feathers a proper single-copy frizzle has.

I'm in San Antonio & I too cannot stand this cold! I felt so sorry for my 4 month old hens that I put a heating pad & a flood light in their coop to keep them warm. I was so relieved to see 1 hen on the roost under the light & the other 2 snuggled together on the heating pad! The 4th chicken got sick

, she was wheezing & sneezing so bad I was afraid I was going to lose her. I brought her inside & for 2 days she wasn't getting any better. I did a search of the forums and discovered the miracle drug Tylan 50. I ran out and bought some, gave her an injection and the next day she was so much better.

She got her second injection this evening and is well on the road to recovery. So, if any of yours should get sick from the cold, just start them on Tylan 50, you & the chickens will feel so much better! Good Luck

Welcome!!

Well, I bought more chickens today. *head-wall-bang*. I just had too! Lol

Their 22 weeks old. 2 Welsummers and 2 "americaunas". They're hatchery birds, from an individual who buys and resells. One EE is blue laced red and the other is a wheaten looking bird. Kinda like a game bird pattern. I will get pictures tomorrow.

I can't wait to see!

I finished my trial egg experiment! This is a potpourri egg!

Considering I used a normal chicken egg (rather than some other, thicker-shelled egg), I'm pretty proud. It has a clay base that I made. It will hold in a small mesh baggy of potpourri (a homemade mix of cloves, cinnamon, and orange rind).

I originally wanted to hang it, but I think it looks nicer like this. I used hot glue to make the details on the bottom. That is gonna take a little more practice, haha!

Very cute! How are you feeling?

Lisa :)

I'm so sorry.  Have you tried an epsom salt bath?  Don't know if it will help, but I don't think it could hurt.  I don't know much about sick chickens though.

Hope she pulls through for you.

Thanks for your sweet thoughts. Rick said he thought it looked like a tumor. He said it wasn't her crop. I'm okay-been having pets since I was a little girl and life does go on

I am feeling really sick, haha! I am sipping my chai tea and soon will be sniffing some potpourri....or Vicks Vapo Rub, haha! I never leave the house (and I don't work in an office), so my family infected me with whatever they had. Of course, when they get sick, I'm home to care for them. When I get sick, I have to go it alone. Hence the feel-good egg projects! :)
