Texas

Boy was it (actually still is) COLD out there! I had to scrape the car off before I went to the grocery store for the last time before Christmas. I beat the rush of shoppers. :) I saved a lot of money too! I love price matching. :)

I think I need to hold off another year to get chickens. I really need to spend the money on some things for the house and yard first. I swear this house is going to be the death of me! I'd say it is nickel and diming me to death, but nothing costs so little here! I got to buy a new thermostat over the weekend. That wasn't too bad, but the $100 service call from the HVAC people wasn't nice to pay along with it!

Yeah, when you buy a house there will always be unexpected expenses, I have owned lots of real estate. I have learned to do most everything over the years, there isn't much I would have to hire out.

I bought an old house so all my expenses are expected, more or less. I can do some stuff, but most things that require tools or a lot of strength I can't do. I refuse to have any debt (except mortgage and car payment) so things get done slowly around here.

I know all about old houses, I sold my two story house in Houston three years ago that was 90 years old. We lived in it as our main house for almost 20 years. It was FREEZING in the winter in that big old house.

I tried warm oatmeal several times last winter - they wouldn't touch it. I had to take big frozen lumps of it out of the runs. They prefer grains/sunflower to peck at when it's chilly.

Wow! my hens LOVE warm oatmeal on cold mornings. I mix in raisins or cranberries sometimes peanut butter or grits. They gobble it up. Guess all chickens are different.

Hey welcome windowbird! I have my little flock in Kaufman with 13 hens and 2 roos. You will find a wealth of info here. Good thing too because I have tried in vain to find a bird vet on my side of the world. Everyone here has been so helpful. Welcome!
