we had rain yesterday!!! Enough to let me know that my "baby" coop still leaks!!! Even after covering it with tar paper this past weekend. guess what I'll be doing this weekend??? Anyone have any left over roofing tiles??

Hi all! We got so much rain yesterday that it left a puddle in my driveway...an actual puddle! Since my chickens were hatched after the drought began, they were completely confused by the rain. But we got 2 more eggs yesterday, so they must have liked it!

We got a nice rain yesterday also .. It was cool enough to sit out at the coop for an hour and a half and just enjoy the chickens (and the mamma deer with her two babies that wandered by)

Everybody must be out watching the humidity rise!

I'm north of Austin... Got two sprinkles, barely enough to get the concrete wet. I wish it would stop teasing.

5 RIR's, 3 White Leghorns, and the Lavender Guniea from hell!

those of you that got the rain were you in the Austin Area or san Angelo. Well around those general areas? I am in decatur and saw on the news that those of you that live in those areas got some much needed rain. Our metorologist said you needed it more than us in the Fort Worth area. Glad you finally got some rain. We have not had any sense May 23rd I think he said. I like CBS news

I need to get me a new water hose so I can set up my sprinkler the one i have has a leak in it or the ends are messed up to beable to add anything to the connector. I have been soaking down their runs in different areas so they can get cool, water pans all over, with bricks in them so they can stand in the water to get cooled off. I need to add a small one to the chickens tractor for them. i have a baby in there as well she or he is about 2 month old now so will make sure i have plenty of bricks and rocks in it so it will not drown.
Stay cool

well no more rain since Sunday night/Monday morning. Well, if we did get any it wasn't enough to kill the dust

I bought 3 lavender orphs, 1 buff orphs, and 4 leghorn chicks from a lady locally on July 30th that are quarantined and 107 chicks I bought from Ideal Poultry that are quarantined in a (larger) different area. I've had them all for 3 weeks today and really, really want to put them together, but the lady I bought the orphs and leghorns from had a LOT, LOT, LOT of birds (in too small of an area - I felt so bad for the birds) and when I went to her house there were several that were sneezing so I've been very nervous about putting them together. Do you think I should wait 45 days instead of 30? The birds I bought from the lady are kept in a completely different house and area than where I keep all my other chicks/chickens. Since I was/am worried about a sickness I've been VERY, VERY careful not to expose the chicks I bought from the lady to any other chickens or animals for that matter.

So far none of the chicks have shown any signs of sickness, but I know that doesn't mean anything.

Hello all,

Was wondering does most everyone around here have an open coop/run design? I do, and I love it, but darn am I jealous of separate coop separate run designs. My entire coop/run footprint is 4x8 and I have 3 chickens. I let them free-range half the day in my backyard, usually afternoon until bed time. I sort of feel bad my girlies do not have the space of a coop house that I see most people have, but I think due to the heat, it'd be so impractical here. I know they are fine, but I was just at my in-laws in MI and we visited a coop with a great set up. A real coop house I wish I could have with a huge attached run, but with this heat and space restrictions that I have, not going to happen unless I move out of my city neighborhood to say, a farm or ranch. While I'm green with envy, I'm grateful not having to do winter and snow with my girls.

Soon to be a resident of Alvin Tx.

It rained this week (of course that was because we were doing the bulk of our moving in a pick-up truck and open trailer). Things are starting to turn green again and the water in the pond came up about an inch, only 12 more inches to go!

Seems my new homestead is going to need some major predator protection. Does anyone recogize this guy? We are thinking a Western Coachwhip, TX Brown or a Hognose.
