Can anyone in Central Texas tell me about feeding Oats to my chicks?

I read that if you start to mix oats with the chicken feed at eight weeks until you reach a 50/50 blend it will keep your chickens from getting too developed and start laying before their body is ready.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Thanks,
Liza

Liza,
This has been brought up before, I don't know of anyone who feeds that way.

Keeping the birds on chick starter/grower until they start to lay and then switching to a layer feed works fine.

Hi Carla,

Thanks for the information on the oats deal. Sometimes it matters where the writer lives due to the weather and chicken needs.

Do you feed your chickens free style?

I have been and then I catch bugs as well. When they hear/see me coming they all run to the coop door and attack my fingers now just hopeing that I will have a worm or two! I also throw in some fresh greens once a day. They also enjoy cabbage but don't really like strawberries or squash. Go figure.

Thanks,
Liza
