One would think the dogs and cats could have been tossed into the car.. but its easy to say then when you aren't the one there running. So without the full story, I'd have to withhold judgement. I'm glad I live in a residential area..

Unless there were 16 dogs in a kennel out back ... or three big dogs that wouldn't fit in his one toyota corolla with his wife and 4 kids .. or maybe he just didn't want to bother.. hard to say.

I've run the scenerio through my head a number of times - what to do with the rabbits.. which chickens could I catch .. what to grab out of the house .. how much time do I have? .... it's got to be a nightmare..

I am in San Maros on a 15 mile dead-end road with only one entrance/exit and no fire hydrants. There are probably 2000-3000 homes in developments off feeder roads to my road. There is ranch land surrounding all of us.

Am I scared? You bet. The Bastrop fires are 40 miles from San Marcos, but that doesn't mean one won't start up around here. We have all of our dog & cat carriers set up and ready to go. I have a few critter mailing boxes to use also. Don't know how I am going to get all of my 70+ chickens into the crates, but I will try. Crates go onto our flat bed trailer, two dogs on leashes in the car, two cats in crate in the car.

You can't judge another person's situation without being there. Even with our forthought, I realize we may not have time to load everyone and get out - cats may not be around the house to catch, dogs may get scared and jump the fence, chickens may have to be left with gates open.

My son lives close enough to the one by Waller that they can basically go outside and get some great pics of it. You bet they have crates ready to go and also have steers. They have a stock trailer lined up if needed too. Praying it doesn't spread!

We have been keeping an eye on the Waller one, but realistically, we are just one cigarette butt away from disaster at any time. It's stupid-crazy how fast these fires can move and EVERYTHING in their path is dry and ripe for feeding it...

DH was saying the other day that we'd grab this, and we'd grab that .. and this would go in his truck and that would go in my truck ....

I said "Time out! I don't have room in my truck .. there are 22 chickens in a giant dog crate and 8 rabbits in cages in the back of my truck .. and I drive a toyota... lol."

Truth is, you just don't know. Someone's banging on your door at 2am and the fire is 1 mile away and you have 3 minutes to get out .............. wow. At least the chickens would be easy to cage at 2am..

Sorry but I wasn't passing judgement. Just saying it was a tragedy about his situation of having to leave without them.

It sure is smokey here at 7L. I'm a good ways from the fire in Montgomery County but its rough trying to breath. I guess all you can do is get your guns, family & livestock & head for the hills. Its so sad. I'm sitting here with tears coming from my eyes for this sad situation that is wreaking havoc on so many. If I was younger man I'd definitely try & give these folks a hand. I did make a donation to help the cause. These poor folks have lost what they have worked for all their lives.
