Know it is not funny, but thought you could use a laugh.

I did, thanks! My BR eye injury may not be as bad as I first thought. She had the eye half way open tonight, I reapplied the Blu-kote and set her on a roost for bed. So I am hopeful that maybe the peak just scratched the eye and didn't actually puncture it. Another bit of good news was that Screwball, our new head rooster, beat the ever loving daylights out of one of the SLW cockerels this evening. The SLW was harassing the hens, beating up on them fighting for treats and Screwball just went for him. I was so proud of Screwball that he may get a better name, lol.

We have only had Screwball a week. And when he first got here he chased the hens and danced and tried to get them to mate. But my ladies are too young for that. I am just happy he is starting to do his rooster duties and protect the ladies. I hope he continues to improve, and becomes a good head rooster. He is only 5 months, so still young and has time to learn his job.

Well here is an update on using pine bark in the coop. It seems to work well as a base because it allows more air to circulate and the chicken's feet aren't walking on the dirt, but it's no good for odor control. It doesn't absorb moisture like the shavings do so the poo doesn't dry out very well. The shavings are much more absorbent so it stays dryer. Only have bark right now and have noticed much more odor. There may still be some bad stuff in the back so tomorrow we'll finish cleaning it out, spread the bark out that's in there and then put down a thick layer of shavings. Hopefully that will get rid of most of the odor. DH is also going to till up the chicken yard give them fresh stuff to peck and turn the poo under.
