Brookshire...I love your maran...Her color will be beautiful. We have 2 cuckoos and they are the sweetest out of our group of 10.

Winteree...Sorry for the loss of Pete...but glad you were able to convince your Dad to do the best thing for him. It's nice you have a vet that will come to you...we've always had to go to ours and it's the longest 30 minute drive ever.

Starfire....So sorry you lost your cat.... glad she came to you for help even though the out come was sad cancer is no way to go. She is at peace with no pain.
Ok...never knew a chicken would get in water like that on their own. Ours like to walk through a shallow pan to cool their feet but have never gotten in the pool....although their are times when a hen gets a dirty butt from dust bathing that I wish they would.

Well, instead of running errands today DH decided he wanted to get a proper grow out pen built. Didn't get started until about 2 and worked until 8 with a couple of breaks. Anyway we took the ring thing out and made a small walk in 3 x 6 pen. This being the old setup. (old pic too)

This is the new pen. Took this before it was done. We finished it with siding on the outer walls and 2 perch. Becka and her 7 were free to run the inside of the chicken house while we did the construction. I doesn't go all the way to the ceiling and Becka can fly over the top so may need to add wire to keep her in.

This will become the brooder pen too. Going to put a nest box just for that in the corner and the next broody hen we won't have to move her nest or chicks she can brood and raise the chicks in one pen.

One more step to getting the chicken house finished.
Still have some more modification to do on the nest box wall. We want to get the quarantine cage up off the floor. Better for the birds, less contact, and easier for us to work with.

Question...During construction today my currently brooding hen Nell got riled and pooped on her eggs. I wiped them the best I could with a dry cloth. I was afraid to wash them in any way because that would remove the bloom. I haven't candled these eggs yet she's only been on them 8 days but thinking positive I didn't want to do more harm than good but they were so nasty she wouldn't sit them. They are still kinda dirty with dry poo but she's back on them. Did I do right or could I wash them without harm.

Thanks. I'll let DH know...Didn't cost anything but some time. Wire and lumber still left from original materials we were given. He just spilt 2x4s for the frame.
Even had a pair of old gate hinges and a hook latch in my used hardware bin.

So does any one know of any good breeders over in east texas?trying not to have to mail order because of drop off times being during work hours any help appreciated thank you
i am a breeder of rhode island reds , i also have some easter eggers , and this year have added some black copper marans ,welsummers, and silver campines. the last three i only have chicks and not ready to sell them. in reds i have chicks ,some a month old some 3 months , and some 1 yr old hens laying. in easter eggers some chicks and young hens. how many are you looking for? i am north of you but my friend works weekends in houston and comes by every friday headed that way so she could probably meet you with some if you r interested in those breeds. if you want something else harley has found a lot of birds around east tx :) and he is one of the worst enablers ..:) good luck

that depends on who you ask. some people say never wash an egg. i say if its dirty wash it. my answer comes from our poulty industry almost every egg they set is washed and they hatch millions if not billions of chicks yearly. others my speak up just my opinion :) good luck hatching them

I am glad she came to me as well. I would have felt worse if she just disappeared or I found her body later. But it hurts when the animal thinks you can make it all better and you can't. They look at you with complete faith and love and it always feels like I am betraying them when I can't make it better. I know I did the right thing, the vet was in complete agreement with me. She would only have died a slow, painful death and she didn't deserve that. I just wish I could save them all. But at least ShadowKat is with Slayer my other black rescue cat that died from feline leukemia a few years ago.

I have never seen a chicken get in a pool, though I saw a thread titled chick thinks she is a duck (or something real close to that), it had a picture of a chicken jumping into a pond to swim with her duck buddies that she was raised with. Not sure why our new boy jumped in. His breeder says he never free ranged or saw a pool before coming here. He also never saw ducks and geese either. He stayed in the pool for 5 minutes though before getting out and drying on the side. Maybe it cooled him off. I couldn't resist snapping the picture and sharing. At least I have proof it did happen even if he never jumps in again. Though if he makes a habit of swimming I may have to rethink the pond idea I wanted for the ducks and geese. Don't want him drowning in the deep water.

I have a question. Should I vaccinate my chicks. If so what are the main things that I should vaccinate them from?
therry that depends on who you ask ? i never vaccinate a chicken or chick.. i want my flock to be immune to all diseases naturally and if they are not i want some that are. i lose very few as in less than 10% chicks hatched in a year and i will hatch 500 or so. i lose less than 1% chickens from my flock in a year and i keep 25 to 75 hens usually .some people vaccinate and may lose less but i say spend your money of facilaties and feed start with healthy chicks and you will do fine. just my opinion and the way i raise chickens is to try as close as possible to emulate my grandparents and great grand parents. so might not work for everyone . but it works for me :) good luck however you come up with what works best for you :)
