Texas

therry that depends on who you ask ?  i never vaccinate a chicken or chick.. i want my flock to be immune to all diseases naturally and if they are not i want some that are.  i lose very few as in less than 10% chicks hatched in a year and i will hatch 500 or so.  i lose less than 1% chickens from my flock in a year and i keep 25 to 75 hens usually .some people vaccinate and may lose less but i say spend your money of facilaties and feed start with healthy chicks and you will do fine.  just my opinion and the way i raise chickens is to try as close as possible to emulate my grandparents and great grand parents.  so might not work for everyone .  but it works for me :) good luck however you come up with what works best for you :)

thank you

I also wanted to thank everyone for their support through our loss of ShadowKat.

And @Wintere I am sorry about Pete, but also glad that he isn't suffering anymore. He is at peace now, and I know that your family will find peace with his loss in time. Just like our family will with the loss of ShadowKat today.

I hope ShadowKat, my boy Slayer, your Pete, and any other animals you have lost, are all happy on the rainbow bridge playing together while they wait for us to join them.

My 5 month old rooster, Screwball keeps trying to mate the new 2 month old black Orp rooster. I knew Screwball wasn't the brightest chicken, but could he really be that stupid? The new boy is bigger at 2 months than my 17 week old ladies, but he comes from quality show lines while my ladies are hatchery birds. Got him hoping to breed bigger size into my next generation. His breeder says he is a rooster, no doubt, and he does have the big legs and a nice crown and waddle for a 2 month old. I am just not sure of what to make of Screwball trying to mate another boy. And it is attempts to mate, not fight. Could Screwball be so frustrated with ladies that are too young that he would try another male? Can chickens be bisexual? Lol.

Any help figuring this out would be nice. I hope to split the 24 ladies between these 2 roosters. I also hope that these 2 boys, both being young, can learn to live together with so many ladies running around. I need both these boys to repell the neighbors game rooster, both will be larger than the game Roo, but not as experienced.

i am a breeder of rhode island reds , i also have some easter eggers ,  and this year have added some black copper marans ,welsummers, and silver campines.  the last three i only have chicks and not ready to sell them.  in reds i have chicks ,some a month old some 3 months , and some 1 yr old hens laying.  in easter eggers some chicks and young hens.  how many are you looking for?  i am north of you but my friend works weekends in houston and comes by every friday headed that way so she could probably meet you with some if you r interested in those breeds.  if you want something else harley has found a lot of birds around east tx :) and he is one of the worst enablers ..:)  good luck

Who me an enabler ? No not me ever me not in a million years!!! I am in north east Texas. You mite try craigslist or Facebook. I use east Texas chickens on Facebook not sure how far south they go with people posting. I have seen some down around Livinston. I also know they have a trades day in conroe 2 times a year but one has already pasted. Not sure when the other one is. I went to canton Texas this past weekend and there are kinds of chickens there from day old to full grown. They have that every month in the weekend of the 1st Monday which will be July 4th weekend when the next one is. There will be 1000's of chickens there I am sure. One Guy here this past weekend had over 1000 of under a week old chicks. Now repeat after me Harley is not an Enabler , Harley is not an enabler !! Now buy more chickens !!

I'm sorry for everyone's lost pets. That's a sad day.

I'm super stoked today because we are going to pick up an old "dog house" for free off Craigslist. The whole back panel opens up and it has a hole in the front where a doggie door was. It's also just over 4ft by just over 3ft and 4 ft tall. I still want to make a bigger one but this will get me started and will allow me to get started sooner rather than later. Do y'all think I should start with 4 pullets? Also do y'all think of birds from Ideal?

Last week storm killed 1/2 of my 2-3 mo babies too. I raised them in the barn for sometimes. Now berfore turning loose, I place them in a large pen underneath a tree next to the barn. My intent was to keep them there a week so when turning loose they will stay around the barn and the tree. Then the next night, it was 65F rain all night. Most of the young naked one did not make it.

Then this week, eggs are slowly disappearing in all brood pens. Two snakes were seen around.

Tough year so far !

When their hormones are racing, I have discovered they are like some dogs and are apt to hump anything. I've had them hump each other - usually these are the older cockerels that were separated from females at a young age - and I've had them hump the ground. I've got cocks that have not been with females for a couple of years and they will flat out hump the ground when they get agitated with a bunch of other cocks crowing and showing off. Thinking it is much like some dogs that hump to show domination.
