...How loud are ducks?
And how much work are they , above and beyond regular chickens.
Is it ok to have just one?

They are fairly loud...unless your neighbors are a couple acres, or more, away from you, they will hear them. They are messy, which means you to need to clean up after them often, and clean their swimming pools daily/weekly (depending on how many you have). I only had mine 3 weeks before I sold them to @Starfire669 ...I don't know much beyond what I've written here.

Some ducks breeds are louder than others. Muscovy ducks are the Least noisy. They are very messy, mine poop as soon as they get in their pools. I have to empty and clean the pools daily, but the water is excellent fertilizer. Ducks eat more than chickens, especially growing up. ducks will eat snails, which is something chickens won't eat. They love splashing in mud puddles and have an unholy ability to find even the smallest one. Duck eggs are richer than chicken eggs (bigger, richer yolk), which makes for great baking. Depending on the duck breed chosen, the eggs can be bigger than chicken eggs as well. I'd get 2 ducks at least, so they have a buddy in each other. Ducks raised by them selves or with chickens can get confused and clingy. 2 females would be fine together, like chickens they lay without a drake, and drakes adds a whole new headache to first time duck moms. They really are not that much more work, the biggest added job is cleaning their kiddie pools. I love my ducks, they have great personalities and talk to me all the time. I love the females head bob, it's cute. And watching them splash and play in their pool is entertaining as well.

Congratulations!

Hopefully mine start delivering the goods soon. Lol. I'm starting to check every corner of my yard for hidden eggs. I just know they aren't going to use their nest boxes right away. The last thing I need is eggs hidden outside to attract snakes and other predators.

I haven't had chickens in a very long time, just my ducks these past few years and a couple of Toulouse ganders for a while. On the whole, I don't find the ducks that noisy. Certainly not like a crowing rooster! The drakes are very quiet as only the girls actually quack. There is usually one that is loudest and complains all the time. But, not THAT loud. Also, my Saxonies are quieter than my Welsh Harlequins. I don't find them much trouble to take care of. Just clean up the duck house every morning, put out feed, put clean water in their waterer and change the water in their kiddie pools. Takes about a half hour. They tend to poop around the pools, so I wash that down every day. They will find any little puddle of water and do their best to dig to China - just fill it back up with dirt. I don't know why people think they are so messy, as it's not like chickens use little chicken toilets!

They will eat grass and seeds and bugs and snails and lizards and small frogs and small snakes and mice and leftovers. Best thing for cleaning out the fridge except for pigs!

Get some - you will love them, I promise.
