Yes, they are feathered pigs. And they love to make a mess with their food and water too. But the adult ducks aren't as bad, so the pigging out has to slack off at some point. But ducks and geese DO eat significantly more than chickens, so keep that in mind when you get/make their feed dish.

yeah I'm making three feeders that can each hold a 50lb bag of feed but i need to make a stop by the hard ware store tomorrow before i can finish because my dad decided he was going to use my building materials without telling me...again.

My first batch of chickens are due to start laying in the next month. I bet Ivory tries to sneak her first eggs in the chicken coop, lol. It would be just like her to do something like that.
I'd think they are just a little stressed from the move. My husband actually dropped one of our ducklings on a gravel driveway, and he is 6'2" tall. The duckling wasn't I mired, though I gave my hubby a good yelling at for trying to carry 2 ducklings at a time and dropping 1. just make sure they are eating and drinking and they should be fine.

yeah i still can't believe the duckling i am now calling Steve Irwin now took a swan drive out of the brooder at two days old i have brooded 3 rounds of chicks in that brooder up to a week without issues definitely a first for me but I'm glad it's OK. i have my fingers crossed for females

how much money worth of chicks are you going to order? i really wanted a few poults or boilers but i need to wait until i get payed tomarro i am in grand prairie BTW.
Mine aren't that much. I only want 3 Salmon Faverolles. lol.
But I would end up paying the same or more if I drove and picked up 3 somewhere else.
And the $25 is before shipping, so my 3 chicks only take up $10.
There's another $15 worth of chicks.
And you don't have to pay anything. I'll pay NOT to have to keep all the extra chicks lol
But the faverolles won't ship til 07/09.

Almost done re-painting my nesting boxes!
I think they'll be done by this weekend.

Is there any reason I SHOULDN'T paint the inside of the boxes?
Like, the bottom wasn't painted before and it started to mildew....
(My father in law made them, so I don't know what type of wood was used)
I thought they'd be easier to clean too, in case of an "accident", if I had a coat of paint down, vs just the porous wood.

If I thought my husband wouldn't kill me, I'd go for some BR, and EE pullets. But he would kill me, especially as we just shut down our nursery.

Plus we have 26 chickens, though I think one of our RIR might be a very slow maturing cockerel. Its feathers are now screaming rooster, i have never heard of a hen getting saddle feathers. But since it is not attacking the hens or causing any problems, i am content to give it more time to know for sure. But dang, 19 weeks old and still don't know gender, lol. If it is a rooster, he will be dinner. I don't need 3 roosters, and he is most likely related to my other RIR so don't want to use him/it for breeding if it is a rooster. Besides, don't need more gender twisted animals in my flock. The geese are giving me enough of a headache with that.

I hope you find someone to take the extra chicks off your hands. I know how much you have been wanting those birds, lol.

Eeek! Well we don't want that! ;) lol
Seriously, the second I posted a breeder got back to me. Her birds are GORGEOUS but they are definitely a lot pricier.
And I need a min order of 8 and their st run...hmmm....but she has Sussex, BLRW and Faverolles...hmmmm

I can't say whether painting bottom of nest boxes would hurt but as far as clean up goes, I put peel and stick vinyl flooring tiles in mine. They wipe down like a breeze
