Texas

Part of it is the regulations regarding processing of poultry. The ag & health depts. make it difficult for folks to be able to set up a processing station that butchers other people's domestic poultry.
I've got mine pretty much complete. Made my own killing cones (red necked them out of traffic cones), the chicken plucker was shipped today, and I have my table, awning, cutting board, and cooler ready to go. I didn't get a scalder, so I guess I will have to just boil the water to 140.

We use a turkey fryer for a scalder. Works great and even comes with a long thermometer so you can keep an eye on the water temp. We just take the gas tank off the barbecue grill and hook it up to the turkey fryer when we butcher.

That's EXACTLY what I plan to use. I fried a turkey only once, and it was a terrifying experience that I will never repeat. I was SO glad I never got rid of the fryer apparatus, though - it'll be perfect.

LOL - thinking of frying turkeys always reminds me of an insurance commercial back when turkey frying was still kind of a new fad and it was about all the folks needing insurance because they were frying turkeys in their garages and starting fires.

I haven't heard from @kenmlang lately either. I was wondering this the other day. Haven't seen him advertising coops, either. Rooster do you still have his number? I broke the phone that had his number in it..

I have been a member on here since 1-2-11 and just found this "Texas" thread. COOL !! I just got back in the "chicken business" so to speak, and have half a dozen birds. 4 Auracana and 2 game hens. Am currently looking to increase my flock, preferably with some Black or Blue Copper Marans. When I joined this forum we lived in NM and I had a nice flock of Welsummers but while on vacation, the friend who was taking care of our birds left the gate open and a dog killed all but one of them. :( Shortly thereafter, we move back to Texas due to severe illness in the family and the last couple of years we haven't had a place to keep chickens. BUT, we do now !!! Anyway, I'm glad I found this thread. We live a few miles outside of Longview. Are there any reputable Marans breeders in east Texas?
