Texas

When they die back this fall, I'll send you some root cuttings. These plants are old and you'll have a good start.

I grow it as well - started from (organic) grocery store ginger. I decided to put some in pots, and then just stuck some of it in the ground in a few various places (and forgot about it). EVERYTHING came up! I had no idea it would be so easy to grow...

Man, I'd love to get some fresh ginger planted! I've never even heard of anyone growing it here in Texas. Very cool.... I've got the serious garden bug thanks to double hernia surgery. As a result, I didn't get a fall garden in and wouldn't be able to tend to it anyhow up until now. Wonder if it's too late to get some seedlings in the ground? Just Monday, I got back to work after a six week recovery period. I'm still sore but it sure is nice getting up and about. Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday and are doing well. I didn't get online much during my recovery so I thought I'd pop in! (I usually BYC on the clock. lol)

maybe not in the ground, but to get a quick fall garden fix in, you could star your seedlings indoors, in a mostly sunny windo sill, then transplant to a container, that you could move indoors when it gets cold......

Not sure what other folks will say, but in my experience, ginger has its own "clock" and won't grow before its time. I planted it early in winter in pots (actually, I think it was fall) to try to get it going early, and nothing happened. I left it mostly because I hadn't gotten around to cleaning out the pots, and then, in spring, it all came up (pots and in the ground). If it freezes significantly where you are, just plant it in pots that you can protect or move inside during freezing weather.

By the way, turmeric is also SUPER easy to grow from the tuber/root. And it's a pretty plant, too!

Ginger will act dead for months or years if the conditions are not right. I grow all of mine in the shade behind my shed. Loves it there! It drinks up all of my washing machine run off. All of mine are potted, but, my grandmother has hers in the ground no problem.

Ginger does not like direct light AT ALL.

Good point - I forgot to mention that. Mine is in near full shade.

Good to know! I haven't seen turmeric for sale to grow, guess I need to start looking. I want to have a medicinal garden for sure. If I could just keep the darn donkeys out of it. Between them and the pasture rats eating everything, it's a miracle I still have any plants left this year.

You just buy the root for eating/grinding and stick it in the ground. In fact, it sprouts on its own on the counter whether you intend to grow it or not. I got some at Whole Foods that was organic (so I figured it wasn't treated with any sprouting blockers), and that worked well. I also ordered some of the roots/tubers off of Amazon, and they all tried to grow right out of their ziplock on the counter when I didn't plant them fast enough! Gave a few to a friend, they came up for her in pots super super fast. Like falling off a log....

And a VERY attractive plant - even if you didn't care about harvesting the root.

Turmeric in front (broad lovely leaf), ginger behind that (spindly one), small curry leaf baby tree far back left (baby from my mother tree):
