Texas

No snakes yet at our place but I know they are there. Last year we had to kill a couple of Copperheads and a Rattlesnake. We use Ortho Snake B Gone around the coops and it seems to work pretty well. Skunks? This season was really bad. Hundreds of dead baby skunks on the roads. I don't miss them but they sure make a stink. No Raccoon yet this season either. Maybe having a bunch of dogs and geese works.

Knock on wood we haven't seen a snake this season yet either but I know we will. The summer before last, we were sittin out back and a baby copperhead showed up - we didn't know it but our dog ran over and wanted to check it out (it was dark and he didn't realize what it was) it bit him right on the snout. Poor guy. He was ok thankfully - just some swelling. And my husband killed the snake.

Then last summer my husband killed 1 or 2 rattlesnakes and a nearly 6 foot bull snake that was headed for my 9 week old pullets.

Ugh...((shiver)) I HATE SNAKES!!

We killed so many rattlesnakes last year that I lost count. I hope we got them all! It's so sad to see all the dead skunks on the road.

Heads up, it's warming up in Texas. Nephew in for weekend. And within first 5 minutes he has found 2 scorpions, a snake, a snake bite and set up snake/scorpion eutopia in a bucket with heat lamp.

Snake bite!! :duc

I was moving some tin around yesterday looking for some good pieces for our new coop. I said to myself, "there's probably a rattlesnake under this metal." I was almost right - there was a garter snake under there. A big one, too... I just shooed it off and we went our separate ways.

I'm a newbie located in Waco. Got my first four chicks yesterday. I shouldn't be this excited about raising chickens right? I look forward to learning more about this adventure as I go along. Chicks survived the night, so far so good!

has anyone told you about chicken math? If you are that excited about 4 fluff balls just wait. Better check and see if Waco has a limit on how many chickens you are allowed to have.

Welcome to BYC and have fun with those birds.

Welcome... I couldn't be more thrilled to see another Wacoan on this thread! I've been the only one for quite some time. Yes, you should absolutely be this excited about raising chickens. haha Beware though, I started with 4 barred rocks. Then I got 2 easter eggers, then 2 silver laced wyandottes, then a dozen Icelandics. You know... Chicken math. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. There are lots of great folks on this thread with a wealth of information!
