Texas

We have a resident pair (at least) of red-shouldered hawks that always seem to be around. I've never actually seen those ones go after my chickens, or even spend very much time watching them closely. They seem to prefer squirrel, and I've got my fingers crossed hoping they stay that way! In the fall/winter, more come in - you'll know how many red-shouldered hawks you have in the area because they all start yelling at each other. The winter ones (way more interested in my chickens) leave again in the spring. I guess the Houston area is around the edge of "winter only" and "full-time residence" for them.

Wow welcome to the Tex thread. I lived in Irving for years so am a little confused how pray tell, do ya got so many birds? :bow:bow
Well, I ordered 8 chicks from Ideal Hatchery and they sent 17. The 9 extras were blue Cochins. Irving didn’t actually have an ordinance until this April. If our lot is under an acre we can have up to 25. There’s a sensible limit on the rooster ratio, which I’m currently exceeding (though not for much longer).

Hi! I am new here, and just joined after being adopted by a stray chicken. We built her a coop, and have food, treats and straw, but no companion. After reading, it seems like that is very important to our girls! I am in Euless. Can I take a chicken off your hands and give her a good home? I just need one female of any age, who is pleasant and not aggressive. Thanks for all
Yes, good luck on finding her a companion. I’m planning to keep our pullets but if anything changes I’ll keep you in mind. The cockerels, as handsome as they are, are destined for the pot.

Hey Jennifer, I'm in Blue Ridge and would be happy to give you a hen. I have extras. :) It would probably cost you more in gas and tolls than it would be go buy one off Craigs list from someone closer to you. I'm on the other side of the metromess from you.
