Block, beam and tile here without issues. Especially since the ground moves a lot between the moist winters and dry summers. We have winter-spring mud and summer concrete for ground but appreciate the tile. In summer it is nice because it is cool but in winter it sucks because it is cold. Cold water from the tap, in the shower, just generally cold below 50F. Regardless, the tile is nice for cleaning, I just wish it insulated better in the cold months.

Are you sure you aren't living in my house? That is exactly what we have. Our house was built in the early '20s.

Hamiam, I would have to ask my husband about the sub-floor. Have no idea what is under there.

I know some people put the in floor radiant heat under the tile. I have no idea on the cost for that. In our house we sold, it had "toe heaters" installed under the vanities. I could turn them on prior to bath time & the tile was nice & toasty

I am just curious Jenny as I have 3 roos to 5 Hens myself. I plan on using a spanish thing I have seen in my neighborhood to keep the guys from hurting each other or my hens by tethering them by a foot. Neither my wife or I want to give any of our animals away and fortunately our breed has a breeding season, after which they are expected to settle down their hormones. We just don't trust anyone not to eat them or try using them for other purposes.

Have you considered something similar?

I spoke with @Jenny K. tonight. I'm adopting her rooster! He's only 2 months younger than our 12 pullets & slightly bigger than the girls. He sounds like such a nice boy & he will love having a flock of his own.

I know my in-laws had what was referred to as "fussbodenheizung" in the whole house. Under foot heaters. I really liked it, I have no idea how efficient or economical they were since I didn't pay their bills. But it was a nice type of heat.
My wife thinks it weakens your immune system no facts just her experience. But I did like this type of heating.

This was in Weiher, Germany but I did love staying with my in laws just for the fact I could shower without freezing in winter.

In Germany it was their primary heating for the house during winter. I still don't think it made economical sense.
