Texas

Can't wait for the break in the heat this week when the front comes through. If we can get out of these 79 degree nights, I can finally turn the fans off in the coop.
My incubated hatch has been merged with the flock and my group of Bleeps Roosters have now all been processed. I'll be keeping an eye on the young guys. I like having a group of roosters, but not if they're going to gang up like that. And, since my incubated group shortchanged me on pullets, I've got an order from Ideal coming in on Wednesday! 21 chicks and 10 poults. Then my friend adds her order to mine, so there will be 54 chicks coming to my brooder/nursery coop this week!! This will be the most I've ever had in one go before.
50+ chicks you will be the luckiest person on Earth for a while. Please post pictures.

Hi, all. I found this website a few months ago, but never came over here to introduce myself (although I've lurked, lol). I grew up on a farm in north central TX. Moved to the Fort Worth area after college (about 20 years ago), but spend at least half the week out at the farm. As a kid, we had pretty much any farm animal at one point or another. Now we have chickens, guineas, cattle, and a horse. Had dogs, but one of my geriatric terriers passed away July 2019, and had to put down the other one about a month ago. He would have been 18 in October, and I got him as a rescue puppy Jan 2003. I'm not ready to visit shelters yet...oh, forgot the cats--a stray that had 5 kittens. Got 2 of the kittens tamed and found homes for them last month. 2 more just about ready (thanks to lots of hot dogs, lol). Last kitten and mama will sit right by me for the hot dogs, but don't want to be touched much yet. Been keeping everyone full of cat food and hot dogs so they don't mess with the chickies. 😁

Just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying this website. Lots of good (and very helpful!) people, great info, and cool chicken pics.

I am excited this cool front could get here according to the weatherman.

Highs on Wed and Thurs are supposed to be in the low 70s at the farm. Wish I could be there rather than at work! At least Friday should stay in the 70s and the weekend will stay in the lower 80s. Definite improvements over summer heat. It's also amazing how green everything got this week since we got some decent rain and temps below scorching.

Sean do you still recognize your home town outside of the courthouse? I drove through Plano a few years ago and those aren't the streets you would let a child ride a bike with a banana seat any more. God we aren't that old. My 1970's self would have gotten my parents into some serious trouble today. Even my hormonal 16 year old self took a 10 speed bike down to Richardson for a girl.

I saw a few pages back that you guys were talking about Mississippi Kites. We had a pair show up at the farm earlier this year. I didn't know what kind of hawk they were and was worried for our chicks and bantams, so I watched them closely at first. They're beautiful birds (all hawks are as long as they leave my chickens alone). They'd make long, low swoops over the pastures, and then eat something from their foot in mid-air. They were enjoying our bumper crop of grasshoppers, lol.

After doing some research and figuring out what they were, I relaxed a little bit. They stuck around all summer and raised a pair of chicks of their own in the top of one of the oaks about 50 yards from our baby chick run. And boy, can those big babies complain a lot about mom and dad being slow with the food! Luckily, they seemed to be satisfied with grasshoppers, etc and never came after any chicken nuggets.

Here's a pic of the 2 chicks shortly before they finally started to find their own food. The second pic has either mom or dad coming in with breakfast for one of the chicks.

Sorry for the book...It waa just pretty cool to have the hawk babies around this summer.
