Allen,
Use a scythe! We have a very thick bunching grass that wraps around lawnmower shafts and eats weedeater string. The scythe cleans it flush to the ground.

Environmentally friendly. Gives you some good exercise. Be sure to stretch your back before using one. Kinda like a golf swing and follow through is important. The scythe makes a relaxing sound that won't wake the neighbors up at first light either. Great for trimming around tender plants.

Although it would make quick work of a sitting broody, you'd go slow enough that you could spot her when you got close. Should work great on cacti and keeping it at arms length. I used one most of the year to knock the overgrown yard back. Reverted to the lawn mower because the yard got too dry and the scythe really needs the early morning dew to add weight to the grass. Don't try one on dry grass. Use the dew.
We looked and my wife wants one I just balked at the price. I don't mind measuring her for one plus we have neighbors we could offer the cut grasses to for their livestock.

I still think my electric weedeater doesn't make too much in the way of noise to disturb folks. I use the greenworks pro 80v tools for the lawn.

Considering that my lawnmower deck just rusted out (again). :barnie The scythe will last longer. Now I need to see if a new deck is cost effective (if I can get the bolts out and I couldn't on the last one) or just buy a whole new mower. This one won't last another season at the rate of decay.

I will warn you. Watch the videos and then practice. It took me several MONTHS to get into the swing of things (that is a pun. You swing the scythe. :D) When I said it is golf like, there are a lot of similarities and I don't like golf.

All things considered, if you buy the scythe and get her to mow the yard, I'm thinking it would be money well spent.

For the heavy stuff, I went with a ditch blade. Pondering a grass blade now that I see the utility and I got the woody crap under control in the yard. No cacti, thankfully.

Yes that is the benefit of not having green jays where you live. I love green jays personally and love having them here on the property, but they eat every cactus tuna they can and spread those seeds everywhere so we always have cactus popping up under every possible roosting branch of a tree. Not a problem for a scythe as they are more tender than grasses. They even leave wine red cactii droppings on our chairs when the tuna ripen.

I forgot to mention DW is a scythe pro having grown up in the EU, and really wants one for Christmas.

I decided to edit on-- Man I miss living in DFW look at this forecast mine is slightly different, sure we do not have the springtime tornadoes they have but still(krgv.com and nbcdfw.com for credits) I wonder how many Dallasites are thinking about turning on the heat right now. ERCOT says not a single one:

Turning on the heat??? Puh-leeze. The HVAC fan has kicked on a few times over the last week for airflow alone.....

Yep it will take a few days until my stone tile floors get cold as well. I am still rooting for this cold front to get here. I can still pass out on my floors and not be harmed by exposure. It would be nice if I needed shoes or something to walk on them. A few times mine is constantly on. I am waiting for it to shut off for an hour as it is set to 84 degrees requiring me to strip near nekkid to type here.

I don't have one of those gizmos. I can go see if harbor freight has one in the morning.
Relax. Save your cash. There's an error in the 3 I have. A Lowe's, HF, and a 3rd I forgot where I got it.
All were under $20.
All have a temp. Variable. (+/- 3-12° out of sync)
All are limited to a max of ~600-750°F.

My original one would read up to ~1500°F before it broke.... I have not found one since that will reach that high that I'd currently get.... I thought I saw a Grainger or MSC catalogue had a "bester quality" gun a few years back.
