Texas

Mornin' y'all. Haven't posted in this thread here, but my wife and I are just north of Waco with about 20 or so chickens in our backyard with an 11x11 yard shed converted to a coop. With that being said, we have 2-3 cockerels (about 4 months) that we want to get rid of.

Anyone interested? One will be either an Olive Egger (BCM and EE cross), Amberlink (our dominant rooster who matured at 3 months 😂) or a RIR/BCM cross. The other 2 are both barnyard mixes.

After reading a few articles in here on roosters, I'm still in "the same boat as you" but, I'm trying to experiment with re-introducing them with the hens to see how many I can actually get to be "team players." We currently have 5 and 2 are not definitely not "contenders" for alpha status, 2 might be and one "was" before we made batchelor pads for them all several months ago.

Tried to re-home them but, right at that time Covid hit and so I just gave up trying... That's when I found those articles with amazing details and stories.

Some food for thought for ya....

They're not fighting or anything really and it's not a real competition, there's a clear no. 1 in the Amberlink, no. 2 in the RIR/BCM cross and no. 3 in the OE. Just a matter of wanting to thin them out a little. None are aggressive or anything, but Sarah won't let me eat them either since they were her babies from day old. 🙃

We just bought 2 Olive Eggers, a BCM and a Midnight Majesty Marans and have them in quarantine, so I figured since we are adding 4, might as well get rid of a couple/three. Plus, she wants to get hatching BCM and OE eggs this spring for our Barred Rock that always goes broody mid-April.

My wife and I have decided we are going to be moving our silkies all back to a hen pen(no free ranging and hiding out on a nest), and the silkie roosters to our bachelor pad. It appears we got 5/6 roosters from our straight run Cackle hatchery order(June Delivered). I do love the fact that they are tree roosing guys. We plan to run them with the free range flock as they aren't silkie stupid.

I like the silkie hen pen idea just because the mowing back there is getting annoying lately with my native aloe and agave plantings. But I need this before acting on the plan. It is a Ryobi attachment tool for hacking through our tall ars grass that eats weed eater string like nothing. Thankfully hurricane recovery has just been a lawn nightmare for us.

We simply do not want our Silkies ever exposed to fertile eggs again. Anyhow my weedeater is attachment capable and compatible. Our December 2019 Su'si(sumatra+silkie) cockerel looks like a real keeper so he is staying in general population. What a beautiful guy he is physically and temperament wise he doesn't start no Sheet.

So last night we made another decision regarding the silkie flock. The coop has never been secure in their enclosure. Any crawling critter can get in there already so what is the point of securing them inside daily/nightly? That coop door is going to be left open 24x7 just like we have done for three years for our Sumatra. Our only threat are possum and the cat seems to have killed all of those off.

Sorry for the 3 AM post but a coyote vocalized and set off my pack of dogs with an urgent need to defend the fenceline. I finally have all 5 back inside and in their sleeping places.

Random thoughts

Nice morning
Coffee good
Need to repot Christmas cactus and aloe
We need rain
Still need to work on coop-today would be good
LUFE IS GOOD
Well if you ever need native Texan Aloe and want to make the drive down here, just let me know I have tons of the stuff. You can bring a shovel or a backhoe. Mine flower in orange in early spring.

You could consider them as Texas "tulips". I have an entire patch I wouldn't mind dug out.

Well, this is Texas.
It's what-6 or 7 hour drive?
Only on Texas-you can drive 8 to 10 hours and STILL be in Texas.

Allen,
Use a scythe! We have a very thick bunching grass that wraps around lawnmower shafts and eats weedeater string. The scythe cleans it flush to the ground.

Environmentally friendly. Gives you some good exercise. Be sure to stretch your back before using one. Kinda like a golf swing and follow through is important. The scythe makes a relaxing sound that won't wake the neighbors up at first light either. Great for trimming around tender plants.

Although it would make quick work of a sitting broody, you'd go slow enough that you could spot her when you got close. Should work great on cacti and keeping it at arms length. I used one most of the year to knock the overgrown yard back. Reverted to the lawn mower because the yard got too dry and the scythe really needs the early morning dew to add weight to the grass. Don't try one on dry grass. Use the dew.
