19⁰ windy
Fed chickens, gathered eggs, broke frozen water and provided fresh water. I'll go out in 2 hours and break ice again
Last night's head count, all accounted for. After opening coop and run, and after chores I am 1 short. No feathers bodies or any signs of chaos or predator, I looked and did not see her. She may have been hunkered down somewhere. Its too cold to do a thorough under/behind everything search.
So ..... I'm inside getting warm looking out window counting heads.

Weather has finished the bananas off. They will liquify and wilt. C'est la vie.

Chicken rancher has offered me Barred Rock eggs in two months. I think I will hatch a batch of stripey chickens this year. Always liked the looks of the stripey ones. A coon cleaned out his Australorps this year so he is rebuilding.

Still not seeing her, however, the neighbors flock IS visiting. Rooster actually prowling inside run

I am trying to decide now if Its safe enough for me to get out on the road.

It's not even above freezing yet and it's almost 10.
I need toliet paper!



My waterer was frozen this morning.

Was 19°F at sun up. It's a balmy 36°F now. No frozen pipes but the ice skating rink has increased in size! Still windy though, 18mph, gust to 23mph. On the bright side, the sun is out.

Basically 10 hours later. Reference for the melt even though the temperature was briefly above 32*F.

Again not very “artistic in style or presentation” but, a very simple example showing melt even with the temps below 32* for most of the day. The simple way to show how stuff can “melt” or sublimate (to a smaller percentage) while the Sun is up while the temps are plainly very cold.
Temp is currently down to 28*F and sunset is minutes away as I type this….

Not all the ice has melted from the tree twigs or grass blades…







Meanwhile in the backyard… None of the chickens ventured out of the run (cold but, dry ground) to the yard, still covered in snow & ice…
