Where do you live in North Texas? My 15 yr old daughter wants some Easter Egg laying hens. I presently have 26 pullets (all brown egg layers and an Exotic I haven't identified. We are in Tyler area so could pick up chicks/hens. I am new to the chicken craze so don't know all the abbreviations.

I am near the Lavon - Nevada area, not in city limits. We are about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs from Tyler I think. Will send you a message.

Seems like there is someone in Tyler that breeds Ameraucana or EE's?

Hi, welcome to BYC. Ideal Poultry is located in Cameron, TX (Central Texas). Their website is www.ideal-poultry.com.

What kind of chicks are you looking for? A lot of us on here hatch out all year. Decide if u want them just for eggs or for exhibiting and breeding as well. There r lots of spectacular breeds to choose from. What personality characteristics r u looking for, color of egg, layer capability etc r a lot of things to ask yourself before buying. Ask any questions, we all love to help out!

Hey all!! I'm in Magnolia Texas, just north ofHouston. I just got bitten by the chicken bug in October!! So far I have Bantams (Cochins, a Frizzle, Silkies, brahmas, a Sultan) & Seramas.

I'm in Texas, Fort Worth area. Would love to meet up with others in DFW who have chicken tractors, to get more ideas! Also, we could loan out/borrow incubators and such. We could even have a BBQ!

Hello, I am also in North Texas. (Actually Kaufman.) No birds yet - waiting til Spring. I plan to have about a dozen. I tried raising chickens once before, but I didn't prepare properly, all my birds ended up freezing or being eaten by predators. I don't intend to allow that to happen again. There is a Meet up group in the Dallas area. http://www.meetup.com/DallasBackyardPoultry/
I haven't been but I have been tempted. If Ideal does not have show quailty birds do you know where I can get show quality birds? I want to try my hand at showing a bird or two.

Depends on what breeds. I'm in lavon/Wylie area and I have Show quality LF cochins (bo garret line), show quality Ameraucana (Paul smith line) also hatching out show quality paint silkies. So really depends on what breeds. Between us all on here you should be able to get some nice show birds.

Thank you Chicken Fever for your offer to help -- I need it - I am on the Gulf Coast - humid & hot , with mild winters. I 'm looking for pets - calm - socialable. Egg laying average I would think - not heavy layers neccessarly. I was thinking 6 girls, I would love to have a rooster - an excepttional crower - I enjoy that. I've read the more you handel the biddies the better the chance the more pet like they will be. I have chosen my coop design (from 2 here on BYC) there is an existing 12 x 16 building I will be converting. Thinking 1/2 storage and 1/2 coop so that would be 8 x 12. Picked a brooder design. think I understand that step. Planning a run 10 x 20, half covered (rains a lot here & shade will be needed). They will be able to be let out to free range a couple hrs 4 or 5 days a week (at this time I do not live on the property). I'm thinking let's see if I can manage 6 common backyard chickens - something calm, socialable, & sturdy. Then I would like to have some unusual to and flair. I see a Breed section - think it's time for me to visit there. I like the idea of receiving from fellow BYC. I'm thinking spring , I dont wont to try keeping biddies alive through winter - I not that sure of myself. March - 3 mths from now - to build and study . Any input I will gladly accept.
