Texas

Hello fellow Texans - I'm on the Gulf and the louisiana line - Bridge City - ( down here in the middel of all the refineries)  I'm a newbee and enjoying myself as I stumbel around - did someone say Cameron ?   Being on the Louisiana line I know Cameron La. - or is there a Cameron Tx. too.
I've been looking and reading on Breeds - love the Orpington - but someone posted they dont take the heat --
I've picked a coop design - it's off 2 of BYC --- and a brooder -- a feeder style and a watering system - my husband bought a shop on 15 acres and there sat an abondoned building , so I laid claim.
I showed hubby BYC so he could catch my vision - and he's on board now.  Just thought I'd rambel abit - I have a whole lot to learn -- hoping to be ready for chicks around easter.
I'm outside of San Antonio Welcome :frow

Oh well :) I'm in Wichita Falls and I have two Polish Chicks (not sure of the sex quite yet) and a barred rock cockerel I would like to trade for some straight run chicks. I just enjoy raising them and hoping I get some hens out of them. The Polish don't really fit in with my flock so I'm trying to find someone who raising them.

You have there a pullet and a cockerel polish. The boys always look like their "hair" sticks straight up and the girls "hair" sweeps back. I love polish. But every time I get one something wierd happens to it, so I give up on them.

That said, sometimes a "girl" can fool you. I had one that everyone swore was a girl and then it crowed. But that front one is 1000% boy.

Anyone in or near Collin County that will have Americaunas and/or EEs for sale come spring? Also thinking about getting a few Seabright Bantams (so beautiful), but I need to learn a little more about those. I fell in love with BB Reds, but learned too many don't survive after hatching. Open to info, suggestions, etc.!

I have a friend who has purebred show rabbits (don't know what kinds, except the Lionheads) and she does that frozen ice jugs for them. She sometimes finds some of her chickens snoozing alongside the jugs to keep cool!

She had to put a lot of extras out summer 2011, because of the record heat (117' in the barn, 122' on the (covered) front porch!) Gotta keep the feathered & furred ones comfy!

I got a big tub, filled it with ice and set a fan up behind it, blowing into the coop. I think the hens appreciated it!

I'm a bit north of you, in Collin County. At present I have 7 laying hens of various types, and 14 pullets that will soon be laying. The pullets are Speckled Sussex, Barred Rock, and Golden- and Silver-Laced Wyandottes. Never had the Sussex before, but they are the sweetest, most personable of all the ones I've had. Next time I need to get chickens, I will stick to the Sussex & Americaunas or EEs. Love the Sussex temperaments, but love the green & blue eggs, too!

I got my Speckled Sussex on a whim and I have never regretted it. I only have two, but they are two of my best girls. They would be cuddle bugs if I treated them like that but instead, they just follow me around and let me pick them up for a quick pat every now and then. My 1 white rock is like that also. None of my other girls are like that, they stay just out of arms reach.
