Texas

Ugh had a bunch of losses after the last few bad rains. They where out of the littles I had. Its either coccidia or something ells.

Re-thinking my coops. I currently have no way to get them off the wet ground other than roosts when I have bad weather that's enough to flood my yard. I have worked to build up and it was enough for the rains before the last few. But that was because we where not soaked already. Now that we are water stands for a few days and I know that's going to cause me trouble in the sick department. A bit overwhelmed with the amount of work this is going to take.

Thinking of using the raised bed bricks and making a stepped up area in the pen that's two to three feet higher so it stays dry and out of the water. My pens are 9ft wide x 18ft long. Thinking of doing the last third at three foot, the next third at two foot and then last third at normal. I would have to do this for five pens.

We didn't have this issue 20years ago. Started happening after we got new development in the area where the houses are put on a five foot or more built-up pad. Drainage is not great out here as it is and now .... well my yard is a swamp for 4 to 6 days after those bad rains when we are caught up on rain fall.

I have a similar situation. I brought in woodchips & improved the soil from hardpacked clay. Takes a couple of years & a lot of free woodchips from the county. Much better soil & drainage.

Yeah, as it is I can't even really start a garden like I wanted to. Everything in it would rot like it is now. That black gumbo soil that's mostly clay.

I'm hopeful it's going to be dry this summer and I'm going to bring in sand first.

Going to try the terraced pens till I get there.

Even at 20°F, some of my waterers were not frozen!! Only the above ground pens waterers were frozen, 1 was split open! I guess I built those pens right, eventhough they are open in a southern direction, they stay a little above freezing in the sheltered part of the enclosures.

I plugged in the heater plate for the waterer, we're sitting at 12° with a feels like -3, it never got above 16° yesterday. I hope this is the last arctic cold snap of this winter.

Yeah, it's quite a bit colder in the hill country but dang it, it's way too cold here for South Texas.
