thanks kilsarion, good info on that site!

what made me ask, was the Dennys here in houston at TC jester and 610 has a flock of scovies that hangs out....definatly not what i would call a duck habitat. i guess there is a bayou near-by but they would ahve to cross a FREEWAY to get to it...

I can't stand them, myself. But, my husband is so supportive of my chickens, I couldn't say no when he said he wanted some. **le sigh**

I'm so sorry to hear about your back. Hopefully it will recover quickly.
I shouldn't be having back problems at 20

DH looked at me like i was crazy when i said I wanted chickens, as his dad has some, that are not well kept and are mean and flighty mind you, but I explained to him about my previous flock and that we would get eggs out of it and he changed his mind. Though I still annoy him with the constant talk of chicks.

amg!!! That is a turkey poult right? I want a turkey or two. DH wants them for dinner tho!

I don't mind tho as long as he lets me keep a tom and a hen as a pet for breeding stock for future dinners. I have had bad experience with rabbits and really don't want to get one again. Got him from a traders village and he was M.E.A.N. No matter how much time I spent with him he tried to bite and scratch my feet. He was really handsome tho. Was black and white, had stripes on one side and spots on the other.

Lol.. my turkeys just started laying.. are you wanting heritage or broad breasted?

I need to get a freezer, actually. Right now, I'm more canning and drying than freezing my stuff (mostly vegetables and such at the moment; but, clearly I won't have space for MORE if I'm already tight on space)

Got a couple of things I have to consider - how much freezer space I'm going to need and where in hades I'm going to put it.

I am kind of wanting heritage as I know the broad breasted can die from getting overweight... but I might want a broad or two to satisfy DH thanksgiving and christmas dinner.

broad breasted pullet poults, asking $12
That isn't bad at all. I will talk to DH about it and get back to you.

this might seem like an odd question but here it is anyway....do you NEED a pond if you want ducks? or are there some more terrestrial breeds? 'scovies can roost in trees from what i read...do they still require a body of water?

Nope.. you don't NEED a pond
I give mine a kiddie pool during the summer.. two if I have a lot of waterfowl.. they do muddy it up.. so it has to be cleaned pretty often.. but they enjoy it.

My muscovys can't roost in trees because I pinion their wings (required by law unless they are banded with a solid band or tattooed)
But my muscovys aren't as fond of the water anyway as the other ducks and geese that we have

during the winter I just give mine pans of water.. big enough to bathe in.. but won't make as much of a muddy mess when I dump them and clean them out
