Texas

I don't have today off - but! I have tomorrow off so I can go pick up our Silver Grey Dorkings....here's hoping they have five toes, serrated combs and look at least a wee bit rectangular...I can deal with crappy plummage at the start, as long as the foundation is there....**crosses fingers**
Please post pics as soon as you can.

Hello, I dont have anything yet but in the planning stages.

I live in by Fort Hood. If anyone lives in the area that wants to give me some advice on what works best in our area, who to buy from, or show me the ropes when I get back from Afghanistan that would be great.

I am looking to get 2 egg layers (not sure the breed yet) and build a small coop as cheap as possible.

Thanks,

Shane

What kind of clover did you plant?
I'm not sure honestly. I got it from tractor supply and it was supposed to be forage for deer, but I figured it would be good for a sheep or goat, and now I am not getting one that I know of, but it worked out for the chickens. Also now the dog won't get so full of mud. He is a white german shepherd, and he would be brown sometimes when we got home.

Hi Shane and welcome to the Texas thread. I don't live too far from Fort Hood and FH is not too far from IdealPoultry.com which is the hatchery I got my 8 Australorps from. The girls have just begun to lay and I'm a first-time chickeneer so can't offer much help there as I too am learning the ropes. For advice, this forum is fantastic, so stay tuned.

Hi Shane, it's never too early to start planning. There are a ton of people on here with plenty of good advice. To start, look at the Coops and run thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/9/coop-amp-run-design-construction-amp-maintenance for coop designs. There are a lot of breeders on this site so when you are ready just ask around I bet you can find what you are looking for. I would look here first before craigslist. Good luck and

I'm in between Killeen and Lampasas.
In Copperas Cove is a small feed store called "Cove Feed" (right on hwy 190).. they sell chicks and ducklings.. occasionally goslings and turkey poults. They get theirs from Ideal .. so if you only want a few birds at a time you can stop by there.
They used to have older birds as well.. but not sure if they were selling them or just letting them wander the greenhouse.
For feed I go to D&D feed store.

my husband is deployed to Afghanistan right now too

please don't ask on an open forum as to when the guys and gals will be getting back from Afghanistan... I know it's hard not to ask.. but you never know who is reading the forums.. and I would hate to see the soldiers get hurt because of something that was posted on here.
