I'm not in the homeschool scene yet since my son is only two but we're really considering the possibility due to the deteriation of public schools

my wife loves it! so much time together with our girls! ive enjoyed it too! except for the "i dont want to do math!!!" crap its good!
we desided we would take this on when i left the military and my oldest went from the advanced classes at Hood to being "behind" her peers here in houston! oh boy did i have fun cursing out the admins at the school for that! then we moved from the ritzy kingwood area to the ghetto where its even worse! cant wait to move out to the boonies so we can freely homeschool and not worry about any ISD comming in and tellin us how to teach our kids!
i know its concidered a private school when done but how do they graduate?

Welcome to homeschooling frustrations!! You will have those days wondering 'have I lost my mind doing this?!!!' I just checked Texas Homeschooling laws--not bad!! I started out in Oklahoma (was the first state to legalize homeschooling) I pulled my son out of school the day before he started 2nd grade. My daughter was homeschooled from the very beginning. My son was distraught because he was not going to see his friends anymore. (He lived right down the road from them). My husband changed jobs and we moved to Indiana where I finished up their homeschooling.

When my husband and I first started, we heard from our families. WHEW!! Then the family members started coming around. They noticed our kids could hold a conversation with adults. Doctors noticed how well behaved my two were when I was in the back and they were left out front alone

Would I do it again--YES! Hang in there because it is worth every minute. My children thank me for homeschooling them. When they got to college, they were shocked by the kids who could not write, study,etc. Colleges want homeschoolers because they (for the most part) are disciplined.

--To homeschool you must be prepared to be with your kids 24/7/365 days a year.
--Forget the public school way of teaching. They have around 30 kids and sit at their desks all day. You on the other hand will have school done by lunchtime. That leaves you the other half for chores, errands, field trips, etc.
--Going to the doctor: FIELD TRIP, Store: FIELD TRIP, etc.
--Spouse going on a business trip: Everybody can go and you WILL learn

Along with my kids' studies, they learned how to take care of the house. Not only cleaning it, but to paint, fix holes in the walls, etc. Both learned to work on cars. I am trying to give you an idea of what you can be doing with them

You have so much at your fingertips to teach. If you don't have the money to buy curriculum, go to Library sales, check out the internet,etc. Join your kids up to FFA. sports, etc.

You need to find a good homeschooling group to join. Please check out what they believe in. Some have a 'creed', some don't. Some groups will have their own graduation ceremony. In Indianapolis, they even had a prom!

You keep track of your daughters' credits. Start looking at colleges and what they are looking for. It doesn't hurt to look at scholarships (your girls can do this). When Traci (my daughter) was in the 10th grade, I could see her interest was waning. Not good! I saw where Indiana University East had courses for high school kids to take their courses. The credits for these courses went toward high school AND college. By the time Traci graduated high school, she had almost finished her 1st year in college. By putting her in IUE, I kept her interest piqued and she was learning.

yea my wife wants to teach them the old fashoned way of living! my oldest is a true ARMY BRAT!!!! both of her dads me and retard bio dad are military! i kno i shouldnt bash but he is a bit on the slow side! good thing she has her moms brains!!! but she wants to join the military also! OVER MY DEAD BODY!!!! unless its the (ch)air farce! she loves animals! thats one reason why we have chickens! when she was 5 she designed her own zoo! lol she said she would have it up n runnin by the time she turned 12!!! shes got 2 years to go!

I have 5 grandkids, all home schooled from the very beginning in Texas. The oldest two are at Rice and the next one is headed there in a year and a half. I have sat on the sidelines and just marveled at the possibilities in the crummy school environments that we have now. My one suggestion would be to find a Co-op and stay with it. It can give them the few things that you can't give them (or might not be able to): athletics, competition, socialization, music, art, prom (even dance lessons) and graduation. Also, connect with the home schooling support groups so you know what's going on in the "system." Check it out. It's tough but worth it.

Sarge: My two grandsons are homeschooled. Ages 6 and 8. They are very well behaved and a joy to be around. And smart. Before my DIL quit her job and stayed home with the boys, they were starting to be a bit of a problem. No more. They not only get the best of everything, they don't get to bring home sickness and disease that the other kids have! Constantly!

WOWE!!! i never thought that homeschoolin was so popular!!! it should be like this everywhere!!! wow talk about a headspin! thanks for all the motivation! i will find a co-op and see what has to be done to join one! is K-12 a co-op? and FFA... guess i could find out how to join that group as well! looked into 4h and all harris county does acording to their website is dogs....

Hey sarge! The "chair force" has it's uses. I was in for 9 years and did my share of time working with the marines and army units. They definately had the hard end of the deal but I did my part ensuring my working guys had as many extras as I could procure for them. It was great working with the other branches since they didn't whine and were thankful for whatever they had to help them do their job and not have to worry about the little things like finding time to talk to family back home...it was always avalible.

Anyways, what program does your wife use? I've been looking at some of the packages availible for purchase but wanted some real views on it all.
