If you have a way to heat water you can put it in a gallon ziplock freezer bag and lay it on top of the bator to keep the temp up!

Hi there, I am new at raising chickens as an adult. I was a very active FFA member as a child with chickens, pigs, lambs, steers and goats. I will be getting my first 25 little chickies on Wednesday. I am super excited. I am in Dayton, TX right in the middle between Houston and Beaumont! I am very excited and look forward to all of your knowledge. I am looking forward to my little batch of assorted colored eggs!
Hi, Welcome to the Texas thread. I'm on the NE side of Houston, not too far from you. What kind of chicks are you getting?
our first NN mutt! oldest named iy An-i-mal!!!!!

and Igor is doin fine! well as fine as a croked neck would do with life its not supposed to have!
I have some that look just like him. Must be a Powder baby.
Power is out because of a storm :-( incubators covered up... Chicks hatching in one bator. This stinks!
Fingers are crossed for you! Hope the power is back on by now.

You aren't planning on getting An-i-mal a drum set are ya?

Igor is a cutie... and a tough little guy.. gotta love that!

Is your power back on yet?

Any fellow DFW folks have a good place to buy oyster shell? A couple of the feedstores I have tried haven't had it, and pet stores sell it in tiny bags.

See if they can special order it for you. Mine gets it in 50 pound bags. I doubt you would want to drive all this way for just oyster shell though

Hope your hatch works out despite Mother Nature. Those storms are moving in on us now, lots of lightening, hail and thunder.

we got rain, thunder and lightening.. some wind and "sleety hail".. I think it melted as soon as it hit the ground

A handsome Tom - Edie and two lovely ladies - Fritzie Mitzie and Freida

Edie just learned how to strut his stuff very handsomely and the other day beautiful Fritzie Mitzie was strutting back and forth along our back fence line and she had a flock of about ten wild tom turkeys all showing off for her

My health has been on the poor side these last couple of months which has made it hard to do anything but get every one fed every day. I'm starting to get my strenghth back though so I can sit up and move around more each day that goes by! I have some horrid neighbors who have been dumping toxic chemicals on my property and after being exposed to them I suffered liver failure. Right now my liver is about 85% destroyed and the side affects of that are incredibly painful and debilitating
