Yo, we are having a lot of DOA's with Ideal's shipments here in NY too. It's interesting to see that they aren't doing so well shipping locally either. What's up with their protocol is all I can think?

I really hate to hear ur having a ruff time of it Hon with chick from Ideal. Hopefully they will make good on the dead birds.

I believe it's because the chicks just aren't as strong as others...

Others may want to disagree.. but I have compared their chicks to Cackle's and Ideal's are just poorer quality IMO

Hmm, I have ordered over the years from many hatcheries. I just think it is the luck of the draw. I have had breeders send birds that have died as well. Honestly it is just depends on how well they are packed and if they are hatched at a higher temp which causes them to hatch early and causes them to be a weaker chick. At least that is what I have discovered over the years.

I dunno.. I have ordered from ideal several times.. and have also gotten their chicks from the feed store. Overall they just seem weaker. grow slower.. lay later and are more prone to having bad attitudes. Had it been an isolated incident I could have chalked it up to something else. I'm not sure what it is that they do differently or if it's just lesser quality bloodlines (I tend to think it's the latter). The only birds that I have gotten from them that I really liked were the Jersey Giants.
What really said it all to me was when I ordered from Cackle and Ideal at the same time. Even though Ideal's birds spent less time in transit they were much weaker birds than Cackles were.

I'm sure some people do get nice birds from them ... but overall I just am not impressed with their birds.

So far out of the chicks i got from ideal all 5 of the turkeys are fine and growing very well. of the "male chicks for warmth" i have lost 2. 1 was at about 3 days and the other was at about a week. they are all about a week and a half now. the chicks are growing fast and are just a little smaller than the turkey except for the 2 chicks i put with a broody to try and break her brood, they are much smaller and aren't feathering out as fast either. anyone have any idea why that is?

Sounds like the ones with the broody aren't getting as much to eat

Are you feeding them all the same food? If the turkeys are getting a turkey feed or game bird starter and are sharing it with the faster growing chicks that would be a good reason for faster growth.. since turkey starters are higher in protein.. but if all the feed is the same then it's because the ones that are growing slower aren't actually eating as much

My daughter loved her long hair, but refused to take care of it. She'd never brush it, would sulk pout and whine while I did, SHE would cut bits and pieces off here and there. I finally had it. I took her in to the barber and had it chopped to her chin in a short bob.

She loves it.

Oh well. At least it's easy for her to care for now, and she'll learn the proper ways to care for it as it grows back out, if she wants to.

Kinda makes me mad though. She has the prettiest thickest most beautiful hair! Mine is thin and fragile. It's splitty and it breaks if you look at it funny. My braid is THINNER than one of her braided pigtails. I baby my hair to try and grow it out, and she treats hers like crap. She should treasure having such a beautiful head of hair! Oh well. Our children exsist to try us some days I suppose. She's only 9 though. Maybe she'll learn what a wonderful thing she has in her hair. Or maybe not. I can't make her, and if she won't, well It's her hair after all. *sigh*

Mine curls.. not kinky curly... or frizzy.. but the longer curls (almost like ringlets)..
My sisters had stick straight hair. The only way they could get a curl was a perm or a wig .. even a curling iron wouldn't work in their hair .. They wanted the curls.. i wanted the "long hippy straight hair"...
My sister ended up with my curls.. and she is the one who cut them off... I never got the straight hair (unless I grab a flat iron)!

They are replacing them, but the replacements aren't doing well either. We were thinking it had to do with shipping and cold weather but I'm seeing it might be more than that. I personally hadn't ordered from them, it's my friend Carol.

Eh I am learning that there is no substitute for finding a good, local breeder really.

Thank you all for the insights.
