Texas

I got my chicks from Murray and picked them up at the post office. It was like Christmas and being in Labor in one emotion. My chicks are doing great. Yours will be okay too.

Ours hatch out in a week, if we haven't screwed the pooch too badly with their incubation...My boss laughed at me and said I was sounding like an expectant mother...I scrunched my nose and said, "Expectant grand-mother, I married in to a fully grown family. I know how to do it right. All the reward, none of the work." She laughed at me.

But, she's kinda right - I'm on pins and needles to see if we get any viable hatched out of this batch. So far, things have looked great; but, I also have very dark shells - Marans browns, olive eggs and blues. The blues aren't too bad; but, they are surprisingly difficult to see through.

So glad to hear your chicks are doing well. What'd you get?

Such a sad story, but you absolutely did the right thing. It's never easy to have to make those decisions. I was only suggesting giving the kids a chick to see if that might light a spark of compassion in them, but then again, I remember telling some street kids about an injured baby bird when I lived in Manhattan. They proceeded to try and stone it to death. Not quite the reaction I had hoped for....

My aunt lives in La Jolla, CA and told me on Saturday that two adult women had been seen clubbing a mother harbor seal and her newborn pup with a piece of wood, stomping on the baby even. At 2:00am, for no apparent reason. Luckily someone in Australia was watching a live feed of the beach and called the police but still - who the f tries to kill a baby seal at 2:00am? Yeah drugs, most likely - they didn't catch them - but really? A baby seal?

Like I said, people suck sometimes. I don't judge you for choosing not to have children, I think the world would be better off if more people were honest about that, like for example, your lousy neighbors. Clearly they shouldn't be caring for anything living, period.

People kill the seal pups for their pelts. Clubbing them in the head is suppose to be humane!

This is a link to an overview on what the controversy is about: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children's_Pool_Beach#section_1

Long story short, they weren't killing them for fur, they're not fur seals.

Now back to your regular program of chickens... ;-)
No, people really do kill seals with clubs. Not because its more humane but because it doesn't put holes in the pelts. The babies are slow enough to catch and club, the older ones are shot from a distance.

Yes, but these are harbor seals in Southern California, not fur seals in Northern Canada. Also, these are crazy people killing them in the middle of the night, not first nations people with a hunting permit. There is a controversy over the use of the beach; some people want it for people to swim at, others are ok with the seals using it to have babies. Finally they were using a piece of wallboard or something, not a real club. And they were kicking the pup to death. So. Not nice.

Here's the live web cam if you want to see them: http://www.earthcam.com/usa/california/lajolla/

Seems to me, the seals have more right to the beach than the humans do. **shrugs** One needs it to live - the other needs it to play. So - yeah.

Anyway - back to our regularly scheduled chickenz...

Anyone in the Cypress/NW Houston area get chicks by mail before? Does the P.O. call for you to pick them up?

My older group hangs out with the horses all day. They're great for fly control. Yesterday we got 16 eggs out of 18 hens. Definitely a record!

Whenever I have chicks, birds, or eggs coming I always call the PO lady and let her know, she calls me at 6am to come get them when they arrive.

I talked to our mail lady the other day about it and she said that if it is addressed to me it will come to me unless I call the PO.

My order of Ameraucanas has been put off again, until the 18th

Who did you order from? I live in a small town so I called the post office and told them about my chicks and she took my name and number and called me that morning when they got there so I could get there fast. That sucks that they delayed your order! :(
