Texas

Yeah, live and learn :( I had 4 new birds come in and didn't quarantine. By the time I figured out they weren't molting it was too late - everyone had it :/

My pipped chick is pushing a second bit of shell up down - still totally quiet though at least as far as I can hear. :D

Can someone give me a worming protocol for birds that will be used for meat and some that are egg layers? What sort of a worming program do you put them on? What products?

One other question: I'm new to Texas. I'm in the San Antonio area. When does it cool off? I arrived last year at the end of June and didn't pay much attention to the temperatures since I didn't have chickens then. I'm finding the chickens are suffering in the heat even though they are under trees and most of my property is covered with big oak.

Thanks.

Wazine is the recommended wormer. Some people never worm. Some worm when there is a problem. Some worm with the seasons.

I personally worm when a new adult bird comes in. My property doesn't have a heavy worm issue, so I don't worry.

Texas has two seasons. Bearable and holy **** hot. Bearable starts in Sept, and goes till March, April if we are lucky.

My birds are hot. Wings spread, panting, etc. they stay under my porch mostly in the heat of the day. I provide a mister and a water pan for them to stand in. The horse stands under the mister, as well.

Sometimes it doesn't get bearable until October. You never know. Hint: get one of those trays meant to put under a hot water heater and put it under that oak, a few feet from the trunk. Put about and inch or two of water in it. They'll eventually figure out that they can stand in that water and cool off. It can be a life saver! Here's mine last year under a large oak with a bigger tray, but you get the idea:

There are two trays and the black one is a utility tray I got at Home Depot that is used for mixing small batches of concrete and similar. See how the pullet is in the shallow tray? They're perfect. I just moved and found that hot water heater tray recently and while smaller, is still perfect. They're only a few inches deep like this larger tray is.
