I homeschooled mine all the way through high school. One is a mechanical engineer and one is in Advertising. Stay strong!
Checking in from Wharton County. Planning a small flock and just joined BYC (been lurking a little while). Good to be here.
Howdy and welcome to BYC. I do hope you are aware of 'chicken math'.

Yes, I'm afraid addition and multiplication take on new meaning in chicken math. LOL

I've already gone from 4 hens to 10, and I haven't even started yet. Thinking of building a large chicken tractor to accommodate more. I assume that it is an affliction...

What's wrong with Texas schooling that so many would home school?

Oh please don't get me started.. we moved to Texas from Wyo 3 years ago.. to make a long story short, I now homeschool all 4 of my boys! Just for the record though, it isn't just Texas! When I watched "war on kids" with my two oldest and they pointed things out saying "that happens in my school" that was the last straw for me!

Texas schools teach "the tests" which are standardized test and a LOT of people object to them.

Not all home schooling is the same either. Some parents are VERY active with homeschool groups and activities, others are lazy and spend very little time with their kids. I've seen both.

Bill - This winter my husband and I are building a new coop and this time I'm putting in an orchard around it with rotational pastures. It's my stab at permaculture. This holiday weekend we are building a chicken hoop house for the 16 little bitty's I have in the brooder (AKA/cardboard box).

jajeanpierre, I homeschooled my two when I lived in Oklahoma and Indiana. I will let someone from Texas tell you about their schools. Schools in general do NOT teach the history of our country. They do not teach the young ones the Constitution, Bill of Rights, etc. Our kids today, do not know anything about America and why she is so great. The government is sticking their nose in on education where it does not belong. Did you know that when the schools were started, it was suppose to be ran and funded by the parents?

Kids today are being taught everything but the 3 R's. Teachers (there are good and bad ) spend a lot of their time coaching their students to pass the yearly tests. Homeschooling is not for everyone. My dh and I chose to do this because we saw the way the schools were going. No more discipline in the schools, unruly kids, teachers who didn't know anything, basic subjects weren't being taught, etc.

My family was horrified when we started teaching our two. What about their friends? What about their social skills? Where is your license to teach? When my two reached college, they couldn't believe how many kids didn't know how to study, let alone write a paper. My daughter was taking college courses in the 10th grade.

Homeschooling is awesome! I would do it again in a heartbeat. I loved being with my two 7 days a week/365 days a year.

Sorry for the rant.

I guess you can say I am an advocate of homeschooling.

I worked up in Wyo in the 80s for a few years. We lived in Green River. It's a wonderful place to visit but It gets way too cold for my old Texas born bones.

We were in the SE corner.. about 7miles from NE and about 90 from CO.. YES!!!! It's cold! hahaa.. that is how we ended up in TX! We pretty much lived in a village.. lol... 169 pop town. My two oldest are army brats though so Germany, Cali, MT, Illi, Wy, Wa.. out of all those though, TX has been the worst for us. Not only the lack of education but two court hearings within two years (and I have GOOD boys! However, they do stand up for what they believe in.. I won't bore you with the details unless you ask.. lol) the lack of no bully laws, how they handle "problem" children. Not to mention.. the corporal punishment! I am basing my opinion on TX schools from Austin, Hutto and now Summerville.. so 3. I suppose there are some decent ones out there but I def don't care to move around more and try to find them! I currently homeschool 2 out of my 4 and the 4th is unschooled at age 3.
