Texas

My chicks are almost 15 weeks old. For the last 4 evenings I have been letting them out of their tractor for about an hour before sunset. I've been sitting with them and just watching what they do. Every day they get a little more brave, venturing farther from the tractor. It's so fun to watch their dynamics - I now know one of my EE's is the leader/bully of the flock, which I find interesting since she has not even begun to develop a comb or wattles and 2 of the others have. So, I've learned that "maturity" doesn't necessarily mean boss:) It's funny when one of them finds something new - all of them rush over to investigate! And then, all at once, they march themselves back into their tractor and go into their roosts for the night. Funny birds.

Yea it is!!! Lol I try to help...

Laura - Did you get your mum(s) finished??? We didn't have "mums" in Illinois, but when we moved to Texas at the beginning of my 11th grade year I remember a lot of girls had these big REAL mums stuck to their chest...that was in 1978/79. I had no idea what that was about. WELL, in my senior year (1979/80), my best friend was a cheerleader and boy did I find out about mum's then!! She explained to me how we would buy each other a mum and all of the paraphernalia that had to go on the mum. I may even still have it in a box somewhere...at least the ribbons.

I wonder when and why the tradition started?

Laura - Did you get your mum(s) finished???    We didn't have "mums" in Illinois, but when we moved to Texas at the beginning of my 11th grade year I remember a lot of girls had these big REAL mums stuck to their chest...that was in 1978/79.  I had no idea what that was about.  WELL, in my senior year (1979/80), my best friend was a cheerleader and boy did I find out about mum's then!!  She explained to me how we would buy each other a mum and all of the paraphernalia that had to go on the mum.  I may even still have it in a box somewhere...at least the ribbons.

I can't sleep either, haha! I'm repairing my jeans, though. Gotta stay productive!

My brother's friend's mom is making the mum's base and I'm getting everything to finish it tomorrow. Apparently, he also forgot to mention his girlfriend needed it Friday. I am NOT going to be able to relax while watching Glee, I guess. Or finish that 5th egg. Sigh.

That tradition started because some Texas debutante wanted to hang a big-a** bow on her head but realized it hurt too much (what, will all the hair spray), so she just pinned it to her b**b instead.

...

Just kidding, but right now I feel like punching my brother in the throat for telling me to do it so last minute. Had he told me last week when we were at the craft store and I ASKED him if he needed anything for homecoming, we wouldn't be having this problem. Now I've got to stretch my focus over the mum (for the girl that I don't even know) and eggs AND GLEE (my favorite show that is having the 5th season premiere with songs from The Beatles, my 2nd favorite band).

He SO owes me for this.

Well, one day you'll have a flat tire and when you call HIM to come fix it you can remind him WHY!

Try to fit some sleep in between all of your mum-making and Glee-watching!!

I was reading about the mum tradition. It appears to be mostly in Texas, with OK, LA and AR adopting it because of Texans that have moved there.

The article said that somewhere between the 1970's and 1990's the mums became huge. The mums were pretty big in 1979 but they DO have a lot more ribbons and flair now. I remember some of the girls would have five or six tacked to their chest. It is silly but fun.

Homecoming used to be later in the year, too, because our first date was on November 10, 1979. The Homecoming Dance was my first date with my husband.

Well, I'm going to try to go back to bed...I have to get up in two hours. :( crappers.
